Bitter melon is an annual climbing herb. Stems, branches, leaf stalks, and flower peduncles are covered with soft hair, with axillary tendrils. The leaves are deeply palmately lobed, with elliptical lobes and a sawtoothed margin. It flowers in spring and summer, with bisexual flowers that are yellow. The fruit is oblong, with numerous irregular tuberous projections on the surface. Seeds are concealed within the fleshy fruit, and when mature, they are wrapped in a red sac.
