How to plant grapes
Today, I bring you some small life experiences on how to plant grapes and related content about grape planting techniques and management. Let's take a look together.
Grapes can be planted as early as February or March. If planted late, the survival rate is lower. First, dig several trenches and apply some organic fertilizer, then place the grape seedlings. For later management, ensure the trenches are drained to prevent waterlogging. Before planting grapes, we need to prune the seedlings first, removing side branches and the weak tips, retaining 2 to 3 strong main buds of the main branches to cultivate fruiting branches. Then, set up a trellis, choosing between a flat or vertical structure. Continue to prune the growing branches, leaving only 7 to 8 leaves, removing new branches, and retaining one leaf on the new branch's fork to pinch the tip, leaving nutrients for the fruit.
Disease and pest control: When the new branches grow to 20 centimeters to the early flowering stage, spray 200 times the half-rate Bordeaux mixture 1 to 2 times to prevent gray mold. After flowering, spray Bordeaux mixture for protection. From late June, alternately use Bordeaux mixture and bactericides such as carbendazim for control. Because July to August is the peak period for downy mildew, spray every 10 days for 2 to 3 consecutive times to prevent bacterial infections. Use fruit-setting agents during flowering, generally after rainy days and clear weather, spray and loosen the soil. Also, prevent the king Kong drill beetle from boring into the tender stems. Apply the appropriate medicine depending on the disease.
Fertilization and water management: The soil should not be too dry; grapevines prefer moist soil. Apply nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers when newly planted, and switch to phosphorus and potassium fertilizers as the vines grow. When the fruit is the size of a pea, you can continue to apply compound fertilizers and wood ash to lay a good foundation for fruiting.
When the fruit is almost ripe, you can cover it with paper bags to prevent the fruit from cracking due to dry weather or continuous rain, as well as protecting it from flies, bees, and birds.
In the late autumn and winter, we can thoroughly clean and prune the dead branches. Do not prune too late as the branches will lose nutrients when dripping water. When pruning, retain 6 to 7 fruiting branches and remove the upper branches to effectively reduce the source of disease. During the grape dormant period, spray 2 to 5 times with lime sulfur mixture to control black spot and powdery mildew.
