Winter pruning of grapes is a key step in grape cultivation. If you want grapes to bear fruit, you need to understand the issues of winter pruning. Whether grapes can bear fruit and how much they can produce is crucial here. For courtyard grapes that are lush with leaves but do not bear fruit, the reason is that they are not pruned.

Why do grapes not bear fruit if they are not pruned?

Grapes store nutrients in their roots during autumn growth, and after sprouting in spring, they grow new shoots and stimulate the formation of grape inflorescences (which appear on the newly grown shoots). They can only bear fruit after flowering. The nutrients stored in the roots are limited and can only meet the needs of a small number of winter buds differentiating into inflorescences. Winter pruning is about retaining a small number of winter buds to concentrate nutrients. If winter pruning is not done, once spring arrives, all the buds on various branches will grow together, and the nutrients stored in the roots will not be enough to meet the growth needs of so many buds, so how can they stimulate inflorescences?

Winter pruning also serves another purpose in the south, promoting grape dormancy. Only after cutting off all the leaves that have not fallen can grapes truly enter dormancy, storing strength for sprouting and growth in spring. Just like humans, without sleep at night, one will not have energy during the day; the same applies to grape dormancy.

Timing of winter pruning: The best pruning time in Shenzhen is from December 20th to January 20th. Special note: Absolutely no pruning during the bleeding period! When the weather warms up in spring, grapes enter the "bleeding period" – the sap flow period (after waking from dormancy). If pruning is done at this time, the cut ends are like wounds that cannot heal for a short time, causing the grapevines to drip sap all day, greatly weakening the plant and severely affecting growth and fruiting. Shenzhen usually enters the grape bleeding period in late February, and pruning or breaking branches should be avoided at this time.

Let's introduce winter pruning. First, distinguish between new shoots, lateral shoots, and old branches, and make sure to cut correctly, as误剪 is irreversible.

Pruning guidelines: Cut off all lateral shoots, and shorten new shoots.

New shoot – branches that grew this spring

Lateral shoot – branches that grew from the leaf axils of new shoots in summer and autumn

Old branch – branches from the previous year

Everyone's grapes grow differently. To facilitate understanding, several representative branches are selected for demonstration. The first type – new shoots with lateral branches, which are lateral shoots. Pruning method: Cut off all lateral shoots and leave three to four winter buds on the new shoot.

Special note: The cut end of the new shoot should not be close to the bud, leaving a 3cm gap. The pruned branch will look like this:

The second type – no lateral branches on the new shoot, with lateral shoots at the top. Pruning method: Leave three to four winter buds on the new shoot and cut off the top lateral shoots regardless of their length. The following illustration shows a new shoot that did not grow lateral branches after pinching in summer, only growing lateral shoots at the top, which were pinched again, growing to this length after repeated pinching.

Pruning: Leave four winter buds on the new shoot and cut off the branch that is more than 1 meter long above it. The pruned branch will look like this:

The third type – the new shoot is underdeveloped and very weak. Pruning method: This type of new shoot will not bear fruit and should be cut off.

The new shoot is too weak and should be cut off. (This section of old branch at the bottom has no buds and is at the top, cut it off together.) The pruned branch will look like this:

The fourth type – cultivating the main蔓. Pruning method: Cut off all lateral shoots on the main蔓 and prune one section downward from the top pinched position.

The following illustration shows the prepared main蔓, with all lateral shoots cut off and one section pruned downward from the top pinched position (the lateral shoots that grow after pinching cannot be retained).

The pruned main蔓 will look like this:

This is the pruned grape trellis, with no leaves left.

Special note: Control water in winter. After pruning, grapes enter dormancy, consuming very little water, similar to humans sleeping. Therefore, frequent watering should be avoided, or the roots may rot and die. Generally, water once every two weeks, depending on the size of the pot, as long as the soil is not dry. After winter pruning is completed, fruiting can be basically guaranteed next year!
