Rose Pruning Diagram

Today we will introduce some content about roses, specifically a rose pruning diagram. Next, the editor will explain.

Roses are currently very popular, and many gardening enthusiasts hope to see a rose pruning diagram. This article includes different diagrams such as climbing rose pruning, grandiflora rose pruning, shrub rose pruning, and miniature rose pruning.

Rose pruning seems to have many mysteries and many correct operating rules. If I have learned anything from pruning hundreds of roses over the past decade, it is that roses are very forgiving. Whether you cut high or low, or leave inward or outward buds, in the long run, there is not much difference. If the rose does not grow according to your desired style or direction after pruning, you can simply cut it again to correct it. Once you realize that there are not many things that can go wrong, you will find that the entire pruning process is quite easy.

1. Do not prune old roses (single-blooming varieties) at inappropriate times. Old roses bloom on the branches that grow in spring. If you prune at this time, you will cut off the spring flowers.

2. Do not prune newly planted roses. New roses need to establish a stable root system, and should not be pruned during this period (except for dead branches).

3. Prune newly planted roses lightly. Although they have already grown for a season, they may not have grown many branches, so prune lightly to promote better growth in the future.

Here are some general rose pruning techniques

1. Buy a good pair of pruning shears and keep them well-oiled and sharp. Do not use anvil pruners as they can damage the bark. A small pruning saw is necessary for large branches or hard-to-reach places.

2. Wear sturdy and durable gloves. They should be strong and flexible, covering your forearms. Wear harder clothing like jeans and long-sleeved shirts.

3. Remove the remaining leaves on the branches after pruning (winter pruning). Residual old leaves often carry diseases during winter. After finishing, spray a fungicide to allow the roses to enter dormancy well, reducing insects and diseases in the upcoming spring.

4. Be careful with your hands while pruning. Roses will not刺伤 you if you do not provoke them! Experienced people rarely suffer serious cuts while pruning. It's a good idea to check if you have had a tetanus shot in the past ten years.

5. Start pruning from the bottom of the branch but look at the top when making the cut. Do not let the decision of what to cut make you feel tense or slow.

6. Rose branches will lean in the direction of the top bud. Cut upright growing branches to an outward-facing bud, and cut outward-spreading branches to an inward-facing bud. Cut 6 mm (1/4 inch) above the bud, as cutting too close can damage the bud, and cutting too far is unsightly and can easily cause branch cankers.

7. Cut to healthy wood. Discolored pith (the inside of the branch) may indicate frost damage or diseased wood. Although such branches can bloom, they often die in the summer. At most, they will only be a poor framework for future growth.

8. Cut the entire plant in half or by a third, leaving healthy branches and opening up the center of the plant.

9. Large branches can be easily cut with a sharp pair of shears.

10. Do not worry if there is sap flowing from the branch. There is no evidence that this is harmful to roses or grapes, and there is no need to seal it.

The following individual pruning examples mostly refer to winter pruning (except where noted)

Hybrid tea roses, grandiflora roses, or English roses pruning

The amount of pruning depends on whether you want to achieve an exhibition effect. If you want an exhibition effect, the more significant the pruning, the fewer flowers, and the larger they will be. If planted in a garden, you can leave more branches (4-6 branches, each 90 cm high), cutting to the inside branches to promote good air circulation.

Floribunda roses pruning

This pruning method is similar to hybrid teas and grandifloras, but since this is usually a smaller plant, most of the pruning is done by thinning. They often have more horizontal branches growing towards the center, which need to be cut to promote air circulation.

Shrub roses pruning

This type of rose generally does not require extensive pruning. Lightly prune to maintain the shape of the plant and remove dead branches. If there is significant growth, cut into the center of the plant.

Miniature roses pruning

If you are an exhibitor, you can prune slightly less than hybrid teas. If you want to control its vigorous growth, cut the S branches and weak branches and open up the center of the plant. If the miniature roses are planted to adjust the color of the garden, you can control the internal growth through pruning.

Climbing roses pruning

For repeat-blooming climbing roses, prune when the plant is dormant, cutting S branches and weak branches to control the appearance and size. Only prune the lateral branches on the main stem, leaving 3-5 buds on each side branch. Keep as many horizontal branches as possible to promote the maximum opening of the roses.

Old garden roses and species roses pruning

(Albas, Bourbons, Centifolias, Gallicas, etc.)

For single-blooming rose varieties, do not prune at this time (winter) but immediately after flowering. If you are unsure how to prune them, the best approach is to do nothing. Old garden roses do not need or like heavy pruning like modern roses. After flowering, prune old, dead, and weak branches, generally cutting one-third of the oldest branches each season to stimulate new growth.

Ramblers roses pruning

Prune after the spring bloom to shape and control the growth size. Cut S branches and weak branches, and if necessary, prune to control and adjust the growth. Keep the branches horizontal to stimulate the growth of new branches. Secure the branches to a wall, arbor, or fence, bending them to stimulate side branch growth, allowing flowers to open along the branches, which can greatly increase the number of blooms.
