Fresh flower preservation is a major issue faced by flower shops. After purchasing, if no preservation methods are used, fresh flowers will quickly wither. Who would want to buy withered flowers? The level of fresh flower preservation technology significantly affects the operating costs of flower shops and also impacts the shop's management. Therefore, knowledge of fresh flower preservation is an important skill that flower shop employees should master and can also teach to customers.
Let's first look at some commonly used fresh cut flower preservation methods.
1. Hot Water Soaking Method: Soak the base of the herbaceous flowers in hot water for about 2 minutes, then remove and soak in cold water. This can block the cut surface and prevent the exudation of floral tissue fluid.
2. Beer Preservation Method: Add a little beer to the water for arranging flowers, or pour beer with foam into clean water. This can extend the blooming period of the flowers.
3. Flame Roasting Method: Flowers like peonies and poinsettias are not easy to preserve. If the tip of the flower stem is placed in the flame of a candle for a while, soaked in alcohol for 10 minutes, and then rinsed in clean water, the preservation time will be longer.
4. Tea Water Arranging Method: After cooling strong tea, insert rootless flowers into it. The flowers will not wilt within a week.
5. Fire Healing Method: Place the end of the flower stem on fire and cauterize for 2-3 minutes until it turns brown. Then soak it in water. The fire healing method can prevent bacteria from multiplying at the cut end, promote the secretion of mucilage and tissue growth, heal, and has no effect on the absorption of water. Therefore, the treated flowers will be more vigorous.
6. Deep Water急救 Method: When fresh flowers droop, cut off a small section of the flower stem and place it in a container full of cold water, leaving only the flower head above the water surface. After 1-2 hours, the flower stem will revive. This method is suitable for both herbaceous and woody flowers.
7. Using Preservatives Method: Adding an appropriate amount of fresh flower preservatives to the container for arranging flowers can extend the blooming period. In addition, using a solution of 0.03% aspirin or 0.02% potassium permanganate to arrange chrysanthemums can extend the blooming period by 3-5 days. Adding borax, sulfur, carbolic acid, salicylic acid, salt, and vitamins to the water also has the effect of extending the blooming period.
8. Enlarging Cut Method: Cut the base of the flower stem diagonally or split it into 2 to 4 parts and insert small stone particles to hold the cut open. This can increase the water absorption surface and extend the blooming period.
9. Crushing Method: Use the handle of the scissors to flatten the base of the stem to increase the water absorption area. This can extend the blooming period and is suitable for hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, coreopsis, gladioli, and forget-me-nots.
10. Salt Preservation Method: Apply salt to the cut end and then place it in water to extend the blooming period.
11. Water Cutting Method: To extend the preservation period of flowers, a simple water cutting method can be used. When the plant cut contacts air, air may enter the plant's导管, causing a blockage in the water-conducting导管, shortening the blooming period. Cutting the stem underwater can prevent air from entering the导管. This method is suitable for gladioli, red candles, cattleya, platycodon, and sunflowers.
12. Reverse Water Method: Soak the flower stem downward in water and cut it underwater. Use gravity to force water into the导管 and allow the flowers to absorb water through the stomata on the leaves. This method can be used for roses, platycodon, and sunflowers.
13. Water Breaking Method: Similar to the underwater cutting method, break the stem underwater. This method is suitable for cattleya, chrysanthemums, gentiana, and pearl flowers.
14. Multiple Cutting Method: After inserting the flower stem into the container for 2-3 days, impurities or sediments in the water may attach to the cut surface, blocking the plant's own capillaries and hindering the absorption of nutrients. Cut off 2-3 centimeters of the stem every day.
15. Reviving Withered Flower Material: For flower material that has withered and can no longer absorb water, turn it upside down, water the stem, and use a shower head for better results. Then wrap the entire flower stem with wet newspaper, leave it for several hours, and then place it in deep water for several hours to revive the withered flower material. This method is suitable for roses, lilies, platycodon, and sunflowers.
The above are introductions to some common methods for maintaining fresh flowers, which can be used as reference suggestions.
