Modern roses, white chrysanthemums, and other 5 kinds of flowers are edible.

This article introduces knowledge about the edibility of modern roses and white chrysanthemums. These five flowers, originally intended for ornamental purposes, have now become delicious dishes on the tables of people in Guangzhou. A research achievement released by the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Extension Center shows that dishes made with these five flowers are not only nutritious and delicious but also safe and reliable.

This study, conducted in accordance with the "Program and Methods for Food Safety Toxicological Evaluation," reveals that the amino acid and crude protein content of these five edible flowers are higher than that of tomatoes. The crude protein content of hibiscus flowers is 1.7 times that of tomatoes. Hibiscus flowers, golden ginger flowers, white chrysanthemums, and modern roses have high vitamin C content, with hibiscus flowers containing 88.70 mg/100g, which is 8.9 times that of daylilies, 1.3 times that of cauliflower, and 4.7 times that of tomatoes. The dry matter and crude fat content of these five edible flowers are also higher than those of cauliflower and tomatoes.

Dishes made with these five flowers as ingredients have been served in restaurants. Starting a year ago, the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Extension Center has been supplying these five flowers to some restaurants in Guangzhou. The person in charge of a restaurant says, "Since these flowers are green and natural foods with delicious flavors, dishes like steamed golden ginger chicken, fragrant flower spareribs, stir-fried hibiscus flowers, and wood mallow have become our signature dishes and are well received by consumers."

Acute toxicity, teratogenicity, and sub-chronic toxicity tests conducted on the flowers of these five species show that consuming these cooked flowers is safe. Huang Banghai, the director of the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Extension Center, says, "These edible flowers are safe to eat after being thoroughly cooked, but they should not be eaten raw." It's also not advisable to eat common vegetables like bok choy and cabbage raw, as they contain high levels of nitrites, which are not a problem after cooking.

Zhou Weihua, the Minister of Technology of the Guangzhou Agricultural Technology Extension Center, stated that the center will further research to increase the yield of edible flowers and will also conduct similar experiments on other flowers, such as daylilies and霸王花 (霸王花 is a specific type of flower), to clarify their nutritional value and edibility, allowing the general public to safely enjoy more flowers. However, it is necessary to remind everyone that caution should be exercised when consuming flowers that have not yet been tested. Especially avoid randomly picking flowers from roadsides or parks for consumption, as these flowers may be severely polluted and their safety is unknown, which may lead to food poisoning and other issues.
