Hammamelis Cultivation Methods
Today, the editor will introduce the cultivation of the woody flower Hammamelis, specifically its cultivation methods, as follows:
Hammamelis belongs to the Hammamelidaceae family and the Hammamelis genus, and is a deciduous small tree, about 10m tall. Young branches and terminal buds are densely covered with grayish-yellow starry pubescence, leaves are alternate, broadly obovate and beautifully shaped. The flowers bloom before the leaves in February, with several flowers clustered in the leaf axils, golden yellow in color, petals like silk threads similar to wax, hence the name Hammamelis.
The flower shape of Hammamelis is unique and fragrant, blooming before the leaves in early spring, with yellow slender petals like golden threads, covering the branches, very attractive. It is commonly cultivated in gardens at home and abroad, and some good varieties have emerged, making it one of the famous ornamental trees. It is suitable for corners of courtyards, pond edges, streamsides, among rocks and at the edges of tree groups. Moreover, the flowering branches can be used as cut flowers for vase arrangements.
Hammamelis enjoys sunlight, is tolerant to semi-shade, prefers warm and humid climate, is relatively cold-resistant, and not picky about soil, often growing in mountains rich in humus. Before planting, the above-ground parts should be pruned appropriately, otherwise it may not survive, and it can bloom the second year. It flowers from April to May every year, when new shoots, tender leaves, and flowers emerge and bloom simultaneously, the soil should be kept moist. Apply phosphorus fertilizer once during the flowering process. After flowering until the end of autumn, prune and shape appropriately to maintain a graceful posture.
Propagation
Commonly propagated by播种 (seeding) and cutting. Seeding is done in October, with seeds stored indoors and sown the following spring, which usually germinate in about 20 days. Cuttings are best done during the plum rain season, using 10 cm long branches from the current year, inserted into sand pots, shaded and sprayed with water, roots develop in 30~40 days after insertion.
Pruning
It is preferable to keep the tree height below 2 meters. Pruning is best done after flowering until before germination. Flower buds differentiate about 7 days after pruning. After September, pruning of disorderly branches can be done to favor the development of normal branches. Clumping branches should be cut from the base.
The above comprehensive knowledge sharing on the cultivation methods of Hammamelis, hoping it can be of help to you.
