Philadelphus purpurascens is a shrub, 1.5-4 meters tall; two-year-old branches are grayish-brown or gray-brown, hairless, with the epidermis flaking off, while one-year-old branches are dark purple, covered with sparse white fine pubescence or hairless. The leaves are ovate or elliptical, with the edges either entire or sparsely toothed on the upper surface; leaves on flowering branches are elliptical-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, smaller, with nearly entire edges, hairless or sparsely pubescent on the veins beneath; racemose inflorescence, the calyx is purplish-red, sometimes with dark purple dots and often powdery white, sparsely pubescent or hairless on the outside; petals are white, elliptical, obovate, or broadly obovate, the disc sometimes sparsely pubescent with white long hairs; the capsule is ovate, flowering period is from May to June, fruiting period is from July to September.
