How to care for a hydroponic fortune plant
You may not be familiar with the knowledge of caring for a hydroponic fortune plant in the field of green plants and flowers. Next, the editor of this site will introduce it to everyone.
1. The fortune plant can be obtained by hydroponic cutting and root-washing methods. The former can select good branches to insert into water, which is easy to root and survive, but the base will not swell, and the ornamental value is not high, so it is rarely used. The root-washing method should select strong-growing, disease-free, and compactly-shaped soil-grown plants, wash the soil off their roots, and plant them in a hydroponic container with water for cultivation. The plants obtained by the root-washing method are larger, and it is best to use ceramsite as the substrate during hydroponics to fix the plants and facilitate rooting.
2. During the initial stage of hydroponics, change the water every 2-3 days. The old roots adapt well to the water environment and can grow hydroponic roots after half a month. When the plant is fully adapted to the hydroponic environment and shows good growth, it can be maintained with nutrient solution, which should be changed every 2-3 weeks. During the peak growing season, reduce nitrogen fertilizer and increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to prevent the plant from growing too tall, help the stem base to swell, and improve ornamental value. For example, applying a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution to the leaves can make the branches and leaves greener and more lovely.
3. When the air is dry, frequently spray water on the leaves and the surrounding environment, which can not only provide suitable humidity for growth but also clean the dust off the leaves, keeping them fresh and glossy.
4. The fortune plant thrives in a well-lit environment, but it should not be exposed to strong sunlight in summer, as this can easily burn the leaves; too little light can cause the branches and leaves to grow too tall, with longer petioles and internodes, smaller leaves, and significantly reduced ornamental value.
5. The suitable growth temperature for the fortune plant is 15-30°C, and the indoor temperature in winter should be kept above 10°C. When the room temperature is below 5°C, the plant may shed leaves and suffer frost damage. Managing the indoor temperature in winter is particularly important.
6. The fortune plant grows vigorously with a distinct apical dominance. During growth, the longer branches can be pinched to promote the growth of lateral branches, which helps to form a beautiful plant shape and promotes stem base swelling. Weak and dense branches should also be pruned to facilitate ventilation and light. For some plants that are too tall and affect the view, appropriate flat pruning can be done to promote the growth of lateral branches, increase the canopy, and make the shape of the crown full and compact.
