Thoughts on the Simulation of Original Ecological Orchid Cultivation
Time flies, and it's already 2005. In nine days, it will be the beginning of spring (February 4th). This is what orchid enthusiasts have been looking forward to for a long time. After years of admiring the leaves, they finally wait for the sacred moment when the flowers release their fragrance. Who wouldn't be excited about the positioning of new varieties? In February, it is the season for春兰 (Spring Orchids), 春剑 (Spring Swords), 莲瓣 (Lotus Petals), and 墨兰 (Black Orchids) to bloom and emit a faint fragrance. Looking at the bustling scenes of orchid exhibitions and the eager and proud expressions of participants, how many people know the stories behind them? A lan friend once said succinctly, "Every orchid enthusiast has to pay tuition fees, it's just that the fees are different." This sentence reveals the bitter experiences behind many orchid enthusiasts.
Indeed! Life is about learning, not about being born knowing. Walking the right path is about paying tuition fees for cultivation practice, and walking the wrong path means paying a high price for choosing famous varieties. Successful people seize development opportunities, while failures make poor decisions. This is the phenomenon in the orchid world and does not need to be elaborated on in this article.
I. Heading Out of the City and into the Mountains
Society is progressing, and technology is developing. However, at a critical moment in the development of Chinese orchids, there have been frequent rumors of people (especially those who are particularly diligent) taking traditional famous varieties back to the mountains to "gold-plate" them, allowing these varieties to be bathed in the natural winds, frost, snow, and rain to fully display their wild nature, and then brought back down the mountain when the time is ripe. This may be an initiative of the white-collar class going abroad for "gold-plating," which has been borrowed by those who are particularly diligent. The origin, location, and timing of this initiative may not be clear to anyone, perhaps it has been done by our ancestors, but now it is being developed on a large scale, like 春兰宋 (Spring Orchid Song), 集 (Ji), 龙 (Long), 汪 (Wang); like 蕙兰程梅 (Huì Orchid Cheng Mei), 极品 (Ji Pin), 大一品 (Da Yi Pin), etc. They are now legitimately going up the mountain because there is a market for them! After a few years of "gold-plating" and then bringing the flowers back down the mountain, they become the best of the best. Looking at these rough leaves and incomplete flowers, their value suddenly increases, leaving those who adhere to old rules speechless and unable to catch up. Of course, the owners of "them" also feel inferior. These famous varieties, after being gold-plated in the mountains, are then cultivated by orchid lovers for 3-5 years, the leaves are completely replaced, the plant shape becomes more elegant, and the flowers become more beautiful. In this increasingly better situation, they appear more and more like traditional famous varieties, and the tuition fees have been paid!
Ha! These tuition fees are not small. Looking at the hard work of cultivating for a few years, in the end, it is still the famous varieties that are already at home, which makes the buyers dizzy! Under such lessons, many orchid friends have stood up and shouted: "When choosing new flowers, special attention should be paid to the products that go out of the city and into the mountains. Those without characteristics should not be chosen, especially those similar to a certain famous variety, which should be even more avoided." I sincerely appreciate them for bearing the dual pressure and standing up to issue this just call. Have you heard it, orchid friends?
"Going out of the city and into the mountains," when will "you" abandon this idea of "gold-plating"? "You" know that "you" have created the highest new flowers? Since "you" frequently appear, it has caused many orchid lovers to be at a loss, only focusing on the unique new flowers. "You" are also creating one story after another, and "you" beauty is dazzling to those new to orchids. They are willing to empty their pockets, when will "you" restrain your "smile that captivates a city" and allow the orchid world to have more purity?
II. A Trial Inspired by Feelings
In view of the calls for "going out of the city and into the mountains," I used 14 seedlings of an old variety of Song Mei from my teacher's collection to conduct an experiment. What would happen to this Song Mei under the rough outdoor management? The original cultivation material of this pot of Song Mei was a mixture of 50%植金石 (stone mix) and 50% Xian Tu (miracle soil) particles, with medium and small particles placed sequentially in the courtyard on the first floor, shaded in summer and brought indoors in winter. I have discussed this with Qingxin, an orchid friend, who believes it is difficult to achieve the effects of growing in the mountains.
No matter what, I still insist on trying. The planting material ratio for this trial pot of Song Mei is: 60% of the remaining old material mixed with 20% wood chips and 20% decayed soil for rose cultivation, with old charcoal blocks at the bottom, a small amount of medium particles on top of the charcoal, and the rest is mixed particle planting material, with 20 grains of basic fertilizer. It was planted in a 22 cm diameter pottery pot and watered slowly to settle the roots. When the weather is cold, it is placed in the阳台 (balcony) to acclimate, and once it warms up, it is moved to the outdoor flower shelf for cultivation.
The main purpose of this experiment is to imitate outdoor wild cultivation and to see what Song Mei would look like in this environment? This pot of Song Mei is for the experiment, not for external release, to cultivate this Mei (plum) variety into a very large pot, allowing it to bloom on time every year, with good quality flowers, open flowers, and more flowers.
Also, through the baptism of wind, sun, rain, and frost in the future, I want to see how rough this pot of Song Mei will become? I also want to see if there will be red dots on the compound tongue in this environment (which has never appeared before). The placement location is on the south side flower shelf, managed the same as the下山期待品 (下山期待品, a term not translated as it seems specific to the context).
Ha! This is the first time I have taken a famous variety to conduct an experiment. Admittedly, such imitation is less than 20% compared to the mountains, as my environment is limited, I can only do this. The future growth of this pot of Song Mei will be introduced in a timely manner.
COME ON! Orchid friends! Let's work together to train a pair of sharp eyes, and let those who "go out of the city and into the mountains" wait!
