Chinese Lilac is a deciduous shrub, 1-3 meters high, and can reach over 6 meters at its tallest. Young branches are slightly tetragonal, densely covered with grayish-white绒毛 (wool), which gradually fall off. Leaves are opposite, stipules degenerate into a horizontal line between the bases of the two petioles; the leaf blades are oblong-lanceolate, broadly lanceolate, or linear-lanceolate, papery, with the upper side deep green and covered with fine stellate hairs, the lower side densely covered with grayish-white or yellowish stellate villous hair, and the veins are prominent. The cymose paniculate inflorescence is terminal and axillary, the flowers are fragrant, with campanulate calyces and light purple corollas, slightly tinged with yellow; the capsules are ovate, with numerous small, mostly flat, winged seeds. The flowering period is February to March, and the fruiting period is July to August. The flower language is to invite happiness to come.
