Perfume rose is a plant of the rose genus, suitable for growing in a sunny and well-ventilated environment. It is not strict about soil requirements, but the following links should be noted during open-field cultivation.
I. Cultivation site
Perfume rose is a plant that loves light, so choose a sunny area during cultivation, and avoid planting near tall buildings, under tree shade, or on the shady side of hills. The ideal soil for growing Perfume roses should have a good granular structure and rich in organic matter. Perfume roses have no high requirements for soil pH, and can grow in soils with pH values ranging from 5.5 to 8.0, but grow best in slightly acidic soils with a pH of 6. The roots of Perfume roses are mostly concentrated in the soil surface 30 to 40 centimeters deep, so the depth of the tillage layer should be 50 to 60 centimeters.
II. Fertilizer selection
Perfume roses like fertilizers, especially organic fertilizers such as manure and compost. The application amount of organic fertilizer is about 150 kilograms for every 10 plants. Perfume roses have a long flowering period, and chemical fertilizers should be applied during their growth to achieve rapid effects. The ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for top dressing should be 1:1:2 or 1:2:3. The commonly used chemical fertilizers are superphosphate, with an average application of 2 kilograms per 100 square meters.
III. Planting spacing
The spacing of Perfume rose cultivation varies depending on the purpose of cultivation. The spacing commonly used in the breeding or scientific research variety nursery is 150 centimeters × 80 centimeters; for parks, flower shops, streets, and factory environments, it should be adjusted according to local conditions, using a wider spacing. Before planting, the seedlings should be pruned once, removing damaged branches, diseased branches, and weak branches, and damaged or overly long roots should also be cut. The soil moisture should be appropriate when planting; if too wet, planting should be postponed and the soil should be dried in the sun for a few days before transplanting; if too dry, water should be applied 2 to 3 days in advance.
IV. Water management
Water management for Perfume roses is also an important task. Insufficient or excessive water can inhibit their growth and development, and it needs to be adjusted according to different growth and development stages. Spring and autumn are the peak flowering periods for Perfume roses, and water supply should be sufficient during this time. Before pruning the Perfume rose plants, watering should be paused to control plant growth, and after pruning, the amount of watering should be increased appropriately. Additionally, if grown in sandy soil with poor water retention, watering should be increased appropriately; for soil with poor drainage, watering should be cautious to prevent root rot.
V. Pruning and shaping
Pruning is to encourage Perfume roses to produce more strong branches to improve the quality of flowering. Moreover, pruning can make the tree shape complete and balanced, harmonizing with the space it lives in. The most suitable time for pruning is when the plant stops dormant and is about to sprout, or when it stops growing and is close to dormancy. There are three forms of pruning: light pruning, medium pruning, and severe pruning. Light pruning involves shortening healthy branches and removing inward-facing buds; medium pruning involves cutting off the healthy branches from the previous year at the base or cutting them in half; severe pruning involves leaving only 3 to 4 branches from the previous year and cutting them 20 centimeters above the ground. For newly transplanted plants, if pruned before planting, no further pruning is needed within the first year. After one year, the weak and crossed branches should be cut off at the root, and at least half of the length of the remaining strong branches should be cut. For Perfume roses that have been planted for more than three years, annual pruning is still required to maintain a perfect plant shape.
VI. Winter care
In areas where the minimum temperature in winter is below -15°C, some anti-freezing measures should be taken. For example, pile 20 centimeters of soil at the base of the plant, or wrap the plant clump with straw curtains, burlap, plastic film, etc. In areas where the minimum temperature in winter reaches -20°C, it is necessary to loosen the soil on one side of the plant, lay the plant down, and cover it entirely with soil.
The above is a detailed introduction to the cultivation methods of Perfume roses, have you understood?
