The Control Methods for Rose Wilt Disease

Main content introduction: The experience of the Flower Clinic in roses, the control methods for rose wilt disease, corrections are welcome if there are any mistakes!

Symptoms

Initial symptoms show partial yellowing of leaves, gradually leading to the entire plant wilting and drying. Observation of the diseased stem reveals a light brownish core. The pathogen is Verticillium dahliae Kleb. Taxonomic position belongs to the Verticillium genus, Verticillium section, Verticillium family. Young mycelium is white, while old mycelium is light brownish, with septa. Conidiophores are erect, with whorled branches, each having 1 to 5 tiers of branches, each tier with 2 to 3 branches. The conidiophore and verticillium apex produce one elliptical conidium, unicellular, measuring 2 to 3 micrometers by 2.5 to 6.2 micrometers. Culturing the discolored fresh tissue from the stem in culture medium allows for rapid growth of lush vegetative mycelium, later forming black microsclerotia and chains of thick-walled spores. The pathogen grows at temperatures of 5 to 30°C, with an optimal temperature of 20 to 24°C; mycelium and microsclerotia die after 10 minutes at 60°C.

Infection Pathway

The pathogen overwinters in the soil on host residues in the form of mycelium, thick-walled spores, and microsclerotia. The next year, it invades through root wounds, epidermis, or root hairs in the form of mycelium, multiplies in the vascular bundles, and finally enters the pith. The parasitized conducting tissue is destroyed by infection, leading to dehydration and drying.

Control Methods

1. When the initial diseased plant is found, dig out the entire plant.

2. In severely affected areas, when plowing the land, apply 50% carbendazim at a rate of 3 to 5 kilograms per 667 square meters, rake it into the soil for disinfection, or apply 1.0 to 1.5 kilograms of 50% carbendazim per 667 square meters as a soil treatment in the planting holes at the time of planting.

3. After transplanting and acclimating or at the early stage of disease onset, apply a 50% carbendazim wettable powder at a concentration of 500 times, or a 70% DT wettable powder at a concentration of 600 times as a root drench. Apply 1 to 3 kilograms of the medicine solution per plant, repeating every 10 days for 2 to 3 times.
