The wild musk melon seedling is an annual herb, covered with varying densities of fine soft hair. The stem tip is soft, either erect or slightly prostrate. The basal leaves are nearly circular, with toothed margins, while the middle and lower leaves are palmate, with 3 to 5 deep lobes, the central lobe being larger, the lobes are obovate-oblong, with a blunt apex, and margins have pinnate notches or large teeth. Flowers are solitary in the leaf axils, with pedicels 2 to 5 cm long; bracts are numerous, linear, and have marginal hair; the calyx is 5-lobed, membranous, with green longitudinal veins; there are many stamens, the filaments are united to form a cylinder, enclosing the pistil; the ovary is 5-locular, the style tip is 5-lobed, and the stigma is capitate. The fruit is spherical, with long hair. The seeds, when mature, are dark brown, rough, and hairless. The flowering period is from July to September.
