Lilac Appreciation Season, Varietal Differences and Care Essentials

When does the lilac flower bloom?

As a representative traditional courtyard plant in China, lilacs are deeply loved for their elegant posture and fragrant aroma. Different varieties of lilacs not only present diverse colors but also form a rhythmic viewing sequence when blooming.

Blooming cycle of six lilac varieties

Classic Purple Lilac

The purple lilacs that bloom from May to June have distinctive purple inflorescences that can reach 20 centimeters, with each flower lasting 10-15 days. The century-old purple lilac grove at the Fayuan Temple in Beijing still maintains the phenological feature of blooming two weeks after Qingming.

Early-flowering Varieties Cluster

White lilacs and blue lilacs serve as the heralds of early spring, revealing their beauty in early April. Among them, the 'Su'e' variety of white lilacs in the Shenyang area has been observed to bloom as early as March 28th.

Special Flowering Types

Baomaizi lilacs bloom pure white flowers in June, Xiaoye lilacs present the characteristics of flowering in both spring and autumn, and Siqi lilacs even set a record of an extra-long flowering period of 5 months.

Key Techniques for Extending the Flowering Period

Light Regulation

It is necessary to ensure 6 hours of direct sunlight each day, and planting towards the southeast can enhance the color saturation of the flowers. In the height of summer, 30% shading is required to prevent scorching.

Water and Fertilizer Management

During the flower bud differentiation period (March-April), apply phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer, combined with mature soybean cake water every 10 days. Maintain soil moisture at around 60%, and using a drip irrigation system can improve water utilization efficiency.

By mastering the phenological rhythm of lilacs and combining varieties, it is possible to achieve a continuous half-year display in the courtyard. It is recommended to configure early-flowering varieties and late-flowering varieties in a 1:2 ratio, combined with proper care measures, to let the fragrance of lilacs linger longer.
