The Beijing Lilac is a deciduous small tree or shrub, reaching a height of up to 10m, with bark that is brown or gray-brown and longitudinally fissured. The young branches are slender and spreading, with distinct lenticels. The leaves are ovate to ovate-lanceolate, dark green on the surface and gray-green on the back, hairless, rarely pubescent. The paniculate inflorescence is axillary, with white corollas, short corolla tubes, and corolla lobes nearly as long as the calyx lobes. The fruit is elliptical to lanceolate, pointed at the apex, and brown. The flowering period is May to June; the fruit ripening period is October. It prefers sunlight but is also shade-tolerant, growing normally and flowering under the north side of buildings and under the canopy of large trees. It is cold-tolerant and also heat-tolerant. It is not strict about soil requirements, has good adaptability, is drought-tolerant, and can tolerate compact soils. Beijing Lilac is the preferred rootstock for grafting superior varieties of lilacs. It is a late-flowering species and one of the few ornamental flowering trees in Beijing. It has strong adaptability to urban environments and can also be used as a landscape tree and street tree.
