Method of Cultivating麒麟掌 (Euphorbia trigona)
Today's plant experience is about the small knowledge of麒麟掌, a succulent plant. Here is an introduction to the cultivation method of 麒麟掌 by the editor.
麒麟掌 is native to the tropics and prefers dry conditions. Watering should not be excessive, and the soil should only be slightly moist in summer. 麒麟掌 is not cold-resistant, and in the north, it should be moved indoors or into a greenhouse before the first frost in mid-October. During the winter when temperatures are low, the potting soil should be kept relatively dry. Repot every 1-2 years. When repotting, remove the old soil and prune the decayed roots. After repotting, keep the potting soil moist and place it indoors for about ten days before moving it outside.
During the growing period, excessive fertilization and watering should be avoided, as it may cause the stems and leaves to grow excessively, or even revert to the original species' columnar stems, affecting the ornamental effect.
麒麟掌 prefers a warm, humid environment with plenty of light. After moving out of the house in early May, keep it in the shade for 7 to 10 days, then place it in a sunny location for care. Insufficient light can cause the变态 stems to grow into columnar stems. Especially during the growing season, it is essential to ensure sufficient light and avoid keeping it indoors for long periods. In summer and autumn, when it is at its peak growing period, it should be placed in a semi-shaded area to avoid direct sunlight. Potted plants should be regularly adjusted in direction to keep the plant shape symmetrical.
Even though the plant is dormant in winter, it still needs to perform photosynthesis to maintain basic life activities, so it should also be placed in a sunny area.
The optimal temperature for the growth of 麒麟掌 is between 22-28°C. Temperatures above 30°C are not conducive to its growth, and above 35°C, it enters dormancy. If the room temperature can be maintained above 15°C in winter, the leaves will not fall off; below 12°C, the leaves will dry and fall off. As long as the temperature is above 7°C, it can safely overwinter. By the following May, it can leaf out again.
麒麟掌 does not require much fertilizer. The principle of fertilization is to apply less rather than more, and dilute rather than concentrated. When potting, a small amount of ground solid fertilizer can be used as a base fertilizer. During the growing season, apply a well-rotted sulfate fertilizer water at about 15% concentration once a month. Avoid fresh and concentrated fertilizers during fertilization, as they can easily cause root rot and leaf fall. During the winter dormancy period, fertilization can be stopped, and normal fertilization levels can be gradually resumed when growth starts in the following spring.
The white latex in the stems of 麒麟掌 is toxic, and precautions are necessary during cultivation.
