How to propagate succulents without soil
Hydroponic succulents are popular in urban cultivation due to their clean, refreshing appearance and low incidence of pests and diseases. Unlike traditional soil cultivation, soilless cultivation requires precise control of plant characteristics and operational details. This article will guide you through the complete hydroponic process of succulents in five core steps.
Environmental regulation for hydroponic succulents
Golden season selection
Spring and autumn (15-25℃) are the best periods for operation, as succulents are in an active growth phase and have strong root repair ability. High temperatures in summer can cause root rot, while low temperatures in winter can slow down root growth.
Light intensity management
After transplanting, place them in a diffused light environment (2000-3000lux) to avoid direct sunlight burning the roots. Using a shading net can filter out 30% of the strong light, ensuring a stable light environment.
Hydroponic operation standards for succulents
Root activation treatment
When transitioning from soil to water, the main roots should be completely preserved and washed with warm water at 25℃ until the rootlets turn white. When pruning, keep 3-5cm of the main roots and apply a fungicide powder to the cut surface to kill germs.
Custom container configuration
Sedum species need the entire root submerged (such as Hongzhiyu), while the十二卷属 should keep the root tips in contact with water (such as Yulu). A double-layer glass container is recommended, with the outer water storage layer maintaining a water level of 2-3cm.
Dynamic water level management
During the period of new root growth, maintain a shallow water level of 1cm, which can be increased to 3cm in the mature stage. Change the water and clean the inner wall of the container every 10 days, and add 2 drops of hydrogen peroxide in summer to inhibit the growth of algae.
Advanced care for hydroponic succulents
After three months of hydroponics, add a quarter concentration of water-soluble fertilizer monthly. Adjust the water level promptly when aerial roots appear, and immediately check the root health if transparent leaves are found.
With precise environmental control and scientific care methods, hydroponic succulents can maintain a 3-5 year ornamental period. It is recommended to conduct a root examination every half a year, and return to soil cultivation in a timely manner to restore nutrient absorption ability, achieving a virtuous cycle of cultivation methods.
