The name "Kalanchoe" itself is filled with auspicious meanings of longevity. It originates from Africa, so it has a personality like a sun-loving youth, preferring a warm, dry, and sunny environment. It is drought-tolerant but fears waterlogging, tolerant of partial shade but fears scorching sun, with the most suitable growth temperature between 15-25°C. So, before you start caring for it, get to know its personality!
II. Five Core Care Tips
1. Light: Kalanchoe is a sun-loving youth. Full sun is best in spring, autumn, and winter, with at least 4 hours of sunlight daily to promote more abundant flower bud differentiation. In summer, avoid direct, intense midday sun; 50% shade will do. Remember to rotate the pot regularly to prevent the plant from growing crooked!
2. Watering: Kalanchoe prefers dry conditions. Overwatering can cause the stems to grow leggy and prevent flowering. Therefore, it's better to be too dry than too wet. Water only after the top 2-3 cm of soil has dried out. In winter, you can extend this to once a week. Remember to water thoroughly, but do not let water accumulate!
3. Soil Mix: Good drainage is key. A recommended mix is 5 parts peat moss, 3 parts perlite, and 2 parts vermiculite. Alternatively, you can buy a ready-made succulent soil mix and add 10% river sand for better results.
4. Fertilizing: Apply fertilizer lightly and frequently. During the growing season, apply a balanced NPK fertilizer diluted to 1/1000 strength every 10 days. When flower buds are forming, switch to a high-phosphorus and high-potassium fertilizer, applying it as a foliar spray or soil drench at a 1:1000 dilution.
