How to Cultivate Gardenias
This article provides an introduction to the cultivation and planting methods of gardenias, including tips and techniques for green plants. Let's learn about them together.
Gardenias are evergreen plants that produce white, jade-like flowers that are very beautiful and emit a strong fragrance, making them ideal for indoor decoration. In addition, they can be made into boutonnieres to wear. Today, I will introduce to you how to plant gardenias.
I. Light and Temperature
The optimal growth temperature for gardenias is between 16 to 18°C. They do not like direct sunlight, so in the summer, they should be placed in a cool and well-ventilated area for cultivation, and in winter, they can be kept indoors. To make gardenias bloom beautifully, they need plenty of sunlight, otherwise, they tend to produce long, leafy branches without flowers.
II. Watering
Gardenias prefer to grow in a humid environment and require ample water supply. In spring, water them once a day; in summer, when the temperature is high, water them early in the morning and in the evening. However, after the flower buds appear, reduce watering, as excessive watering can cause the buds to fall off. In winter, keep the soil slightly dry.
III. Fertilization
Gardenias are fertilizer-loving plants. During their growing period, fertilize them once every two weeks with diluted compound fertilizer, supplemented with a bit of ferrous sulfate to adjust the soil and provide iron for the plant. When the flower buds emerge, use some phosphorus-potassium fertilizer to make the flowers bigger and more beautiful. Note that fertilization should be stopped after cooling down in summer and winter.
IV. Pruning
In February, you need to prune the gardenias, cutting off some strong-growing branches and withered or yellowed leaves to reduce nutrient consumption and promote the growth of lateral branches.
