Wisteria Grafting Time and Methods

Here is an introduction to the timing and methods of grafting Wisteria, followed by detailed content sharing.

Timing: Wisteria grafting繁殖 is generally done in spring or autumn. Bud grafting: Align the robust and plump buds of Wisteria with the cambium layer of the rootstock, then tie them up. Cut grafting: Split the rootstock longitudinally and insert the scion into the cut of the rootstock. Post-maintenance: After the scion has taken root, remove the plastic film on top to ventilate.

How to Graft Wisteria

1. -- Timing --

Wisteria grafting繁殖 is generally done in spring or autumn, with the specific timing in spring from early March to mid-April. During this period, the buds are germinating, the climate is suitable, the grafting survival rate is high, and it is easy for later management. In autumn, choose a sunny day from late August to mid-October.

2. -- Bud Grafting --

Wisteria can be grafted using the bud method. First, make a vertical cut from top to bottom on the smooth part of the rootstock, about 2 centimeters long, then cut outward at a 30-degree angle. Cut a healthy and plump bud from the mother plant, align it with the cambium layer of the rootstock, and tie it up with plastic film.

3. -- Cut Grafting --

Select a robust seedling as the rootstock and split it longitudinally near the outer edge of the top, to a depth of 3-4 centimeters. Then, cut the Wisteria scion with 2-3 buds into a wedge shape from the base, insert it into the rootstock cut, and finally wrap it with plastic film, leaving the bud head exposed.

4. -- Post-maintenance --

After the Wisteria scion has taken root, promptly remove the plastic film on top for ventilation. Later, cut the scion head short to promote nutrient concentration and cultivate thick branches. If the scion is still wilted within 2 weeks after grafting, it indicates that the grafting has failed, and the operation needs to be redone.
