Reasons for the Easy Sunburn of Peony Leaves in Summer
Today's plant experience brings you the introduction to peonies from the Flower Clinic, including the reasons why peony leaves are prone to sunburn in summer. Let's introduce them next.
In summer, with high temperatures, peony leaves are exposed to strong sunlight, sometimes causing the leaf tips and edges to turn yellow and dry. Based on years of observation and analysis, I will discuss the causes and preventive measures.
First, the reasons for the dry tips and edges of peony leaves
1. Soil alkalinity - Alkaline soil reduces the absorption of water and nutrients by peony roots, causing nutritional imbalance. High summer temperatures and sunburn further exacerbate the imbalance between the plant's supply and demand for water and nutrients, leading to dry tips and edges on the leaves, and in severe cases, the entire plant's leaves wither and dry.
2. Soil excessively sandy - Excessively sandy soil easily loses water and fertilizers, and dries out, causing poor growth of peonies. In the hot summer, due to the rapid rise in surface temperature of sandy soil, increased transpiration causes the peony leaves to lose a lot of water, leading to dry tips and edges.
3. Poor soil fertility - In nutrient-poor soil, the plant grows weakly, the leaves are thin and pale, and their resistance is poor, making it easy for the leaves to develop dry tips and edges under the scorching sun.
4. Soil compaction - Soil compaction affects the circulation and exchange of water, nutrients, and air. Under strong sunlight and high temperatures, excessive evaporation of water prevents the roots from absorbing water and nutrients from the deep soil in time, and the leaf tips and edges at the top and edges of the leaves are most affected by sunburn.
5. Continuous cropping - Continuous cropping leads to a decline in soil fertility, a lack of absorbable nutrients and trace elements, reduced plant resistance, increased pests and diseases, and an increased likelihood of dry leaf tips and edges.
6. Late planting - Planting too late means that the roots cannot grow fibrous roots before the soil freezes. In the following spring, when peonies grow rapidly, the roots cannot absorb sufficient water and nutrients. In hot and dry summers, it is easy for peony branches and leaves to wilt, causing leaf shrinkage and dry edges.
Different peony varieties have different abilities to resist high-temperature sunburn. In the same plot, some peony plants grow robust with thick leaves and rarely show dry tips even under strong sunlight, maintaining deep green leaves until late autumn; while some varieties have thin leaves, light color, and slightly poorer resistance to summer sunburn, resulting in more dry tips and edges, leading to a large number of leaf spot diseases and premature leaf rot.
Second, preventive measures
1. It is not suitable to plant peonies in saline-alkali or sandy lands. If planting is necessary, the soil should be replaced in saline-alkali lands, and an appropriate amount of clay should be added to sandy lands. Continuous cropping should be avoided, and compacted soil should be deeply turned to improve soil permeability.
2. Apply organic or compound fertilizers to improve soil fertility and promote robust plant growth.
3. Plant at the right time and water promptly during dry periods. For soil with poor water retention, watering should also be done promptly. Before the hot summer, a棚架 can be set up for shade.
4. From May, you can spray 50% carbendazim 600 times solution or 70% thiophanate-methyl 800 times solution, and add 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate. For poor soil, you can also add 0.2% urea, once every 15 to 20 days, until the end of July.
The above measures can effectively enhance the growth of peonies, reduce the damage caused by sunburn, and decrease the occurrence of dry leaf tips and edges, laying a good foundation for flowering next year.
The above is the complete introduction to the reasons for the easy sunburn of peony leaves in summer, for everyone to learn and understand!
