African Jasmine is an evergreen (climbing) shrub or small tree of the Apocynaceae family Fagraea genus, native to southern China and Southeast Asian countries. Its original name is Hua Hui Li Wood (seen in books such as " Illustrated Flora of China" and "Yunnan Flora"), with aliases such as Hua Hui Li Wood, Qing Huang Guo, etc. It resembles the Osmanthus of the Oleaceae family only in that the leaves are opposite and the flowers have a fragrance. Due to the homophonic similarity between Hui Li Wood and Jasmine, and to make the name more appealing and easier for sales, flower merchants gave it a new name "African Jasmine."
