Jasmine is a typical warm and sun-loving flower variety. If the temperature is relatively low in winter, improper handling can easily cause frostbite on the branches or even freeze them to death. In the winter management of jasmine, we need to pay attention to the following six points.
1. Do not move indoors too early
In southern regions, the winter temperature will remain around 10 degrees, and jasmine can naturally overwinter outdoors without any problems. In the north, where there is heating, it is also fine to keep jasmine indoors at a greenhouse temperature of about 20 degrees.
However, in regions without heating and where winters are relatively cold, we need to be careful. Do not rush to move it indoors. When the temperature starts to drop, it should be kept outdoors to allow the jasmine plant to withstand the cold. This helps enhance the cold resistance of the branches.
As the saying goes, "Keep warm in spring and freeze in autumn." It means that freezing in autumn can prevent illness due to cold in winter. The same is true for jasmine. In the early winter, proper branch training is necessary. Therefore, do not rush to move indoors until the temperature stays above 5 degrees. When the temperature consistently drops below 5 degrees, then move indoors.
2. Do not prune heavily
When moving jasmine indoors, we usually prune it because long branches take up a lot of space. However, pruning jasmine in winter should be light, not heavy, as heavy pruning can cause the entire plant to wither.
The correct approach is to prune away half of the tender branches of the jasmine when moving indoors, retaining most of the leaves. Then, prune again when the temperature stabilizes in the spring.
3. Maintain sufficient sunlight
Jasmine should also maintain sufficient sunlight in winter. A position with adequate sunlight will be relatively warm, and on the other hand, jasmine needs sunlight. Therefore, when moving indoors in winter, pruning should retain leaves for photosynthesis.
4. Do not water excessively
In winter, when the temperature is relatively low and water loss is slow, watering must be controlled and not excessive. If the roots of jasmine are in a wet and cold environment for a long time in winter, they can easily freeze to death.
When the potting soil is relatively dry, you can water with warm water at noon on a sunny day, pouring along the edge of the pot. After watering, ensure good ventilation in the environment to allow excess water to dissipate quickly.
