Newly purchased orchid care methods and handling skills

How to Handle Orchids After Buying

Newly acquired orchids require professional handling to grow healthily. This article systematically explains four key handling steps from root disinfection to environmental control, helping beginners quickly master the essentials of orchid care after transplanting to ensure the plants adapt successfully.

Basic Handling for New Orchids

1. Root Disinfection and Sterilization

After unpacking, place in a shaded and well-ventilated area for 2 hours, and use a disinfected scissor to cut off blackened or hollow roots. Prepare a 5% potassium permanganate solution (0.5 grams of medication per liter of water), soak the roots for 25-30 minutes to effectively prevent soft rot. The roots should be dried to a semi-transparent state before potting.

2. Scientific Fertilization Management

Professional nurseries usually use slow-release fertilizers, it is recommended to stop fertilizing within 30 days after purchase. Maintain humidity by foliar watering (spray twice a day, morning and evening), and use a 2000 times diluted orchid-specific nutrient solution after new leaves unfold to avoid root burn from excessive fertilization.

Environmental Control Points

3. Temperature and Humidity Balance

Maintain a day-night temperature difference of 18-22°C, and keep humidity between 60%-70%. When using a humidifier, keep it at least 1 meter away from the plants, and avoid direct heat from radiators in winter. Place a water tray to increase humidity through evaporation, and ensure proper ventilation to prevent mold.

4. Progressive Watering Method

Water for the first time 48 hours after potting, using the immersion method (water level reaches 1/3 of the pot height) for 15 minutes. Subsequently, use the bamboo stake test to determine when to water: insert a stake into the soil for 5 minutes, if no soil sticks to it, water thoroughly. Water every 5-7 days in spring and autumn, every 3 days in summer, and every 10-15 days in winter.

Through root treatment, precise watering, and environmental control in three stages of care, the survival rate of newly purchased orchids can be increased to over 90%. It is recommended to check the substrate pH value monthly (5.5-6.5 is ideal) and complement with scattered light (20,000-30,000 Lux) to allow the orchids to complete the adaptation process within 3-6 months.
