Bougainvillea (Paper Flower) is an evergreen climbing shrub. It has a藤状灌木 appearance with thick stems, drooping branches, hairless or sparsely pubescent; axillary thorns, 5-15 mm long. The leaves are papery, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 5-13 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, acute or acuminate at the apex, rounded or broadly cuneate at the base, glabrous on the upper surface, pubescent beneath; petiole 1 cm long. The flowers are borne in the apical part of the branch within 3 bracts, the pedicel adheres to the midrib of the bract, with one flower per bract; the bracts are leaf-like, purple or crimson, oblong or elliptical, 2.5-3.5 cm long, about 2 cm wide, papery; the perianth tube is about 2 cm long, light green, sparsely pubescent, with angles, 5 shallowly lobed at the apex; stamens 6-8; the style is lateral, linear, the margin expanded into a thin lamina, the stigma pointed; the nectar disc is fused at the base forming a ring, the upper part撕裂状. The flowering period is between winter and spring (Guangzhou, Hainan, Kunming), and in the north, it is cultivated in greenhouses from March to July. It prefers a warm and humid climate and is not cold-resistant. It thrives in full sunlight. It is not particular about soil but dislikes waterlogging and cannot tolerate flooding, therefore, it is necessary to choose a loose, well-drained potting soil. It symbolizes enthusiasm, resilience, and a tenacious spirit of striving forward. It is the national flower of Zambia and the provincial flower of Hainan Province.
