Orchid Disease and Pest Control

If you want to learn about orchids, the knowledge of orchid disease and pest control, the editor will introduce it next.

I. (T-J) Disease

This disease is the most common disease in orchids, mainly affecting the leaves. In the later stage, black dots appear on the lesions, eventually causing the leaves to wither and turn yellow. This disease often occurs in May to June, during the plum rain season, or in September to October when there is more rain or more typhoons.

Control methods: ① Timely cut off the diseased leaves and burn the diseased residue. ② Improve the watering method, that is, slowly pour water into the edge of the pot. ③ After new leaves sprout in winter, spray Bordeaux mixture (1:1:140) 1-2 times. In the early stage of the disease, spray 50% carbendazim 500-600 times liquid, and at the same time, strengthen ventilation and avoid spraying water on the leaf surface.

II. Leaf Withering Disease

It mainly invades the leaves of orchids, initially appearing as small red-brown spots, which quickly expand into elliptical or round black-brown lesions. There are many lesions on the leaves, and the leaf tissue between the lesions loses green and turns yellow and withers.

Control methods: ① Remove the diseased leaves and burn the diseased residue. ② Pay attention to ventilation and avoid excessive watering and direct spraying on the plant. ③ Spray 50% thiophanate-methyl 600-800 times liquid. Spray once every 10 days, and spray 3-4 times in a row.

III. White Silk Disease

One of the major diseases of the orchid genus, caused by fungi. It is prone to occur in the hot and rainy season, often appearing in May and June, and peaking in July and August.

Control methods: ① Timely remove diseased leaves, plants, and diseased holes, and sprinkle lime for disinfection; before planting, drench the potting soil with a 30% soil disinfectant solution. ② In the early stage of the disease, spray 1:500 times of carbendazim on the leaf surface and drench the roots.

IV. Scale Insects

The most common are shield insects and mealybugs. The occurrence period is from April to October, and it occasionally occurs in winter. They have a very high reproductive capacity, with multiple generations overlapping in a year, and are most severe from May to October.

Control methods: ① When few, use a soft brush to remove and then rinse with water. ② When many, spray 40% fast-acting insecticide emulsion 1000 times during the peak hatching period. When spraying, make sure to spray both sides of the leaves, and spray 3-4 times continuously, with an interval of 5-7 days, to basically eliminate them.

V. Red Spider Mite

They have a high reproductive capacity and cause serious harm, often occurring in the hot period from June to August.

Control methods: ① When few, use a brush or small brush to remove. ② When many, use 40% trichlorfon 1000 times liquid to kill. ③ A traditional method is to light a mosquito coil and place it in the pot of the diseased plant, then cover the pot with a plastic bag. After 1 hour of smoking, both eggs and adult insects are killed without affecting the plant.
