Rose Plant Disease and Pest Control
The editor provides netizens with related experiences about roses and China roses, rose plant disease and pest control. Next, our site editor will introduce to everyone.
Almost all hybrid roses planted now are bound to get sick, such as black spot, powdery mildew, dieback, etc., especially black spot disease. Last early spring, I sprinkled a layer of plant ash on the surface of the rose pot, almost didn't spray any medicine, and only preventively sprayed plant ash extract twice during the period. It wasn't until mid-summer that occasional black spots appeared, and after two sprays in autumn, no more appeared. In previous years, if it rained a bit more in May, black spots would start to appear.
Using plant ash in early spring is still quite effective. When black spots first appear, remove the diseased leaves and spray with methylethylthiophene, carbendazim, or chlorothalonil. You can spray once a week and alternate them. Using Bordeaux mixture before the early spring germination is also effective, but it needs to be mixed by yourself, which is more troublesome. Compared to plant ash, it is still a good choice.
In the early stage of powdery mildew, you don't need to use medicine, remove the diseased leaves, and spray with water strongly every day, which can stop it, but the prerequisite is that excessive humidity will not cause black spot disease. If black spot and powdery mildew coexist, it's better to use medicine. In addition, preventive spraying of antibacterial drugs can be alternated with plant ash extract. Overall, the use of plant ash in roses and orchids in the past two years has been quite effective, non-toxic, and can supplement potassium fertilizer.
The pest damage I've encountered is mainly red spider mites and aphids, which happen almost every year. For aphids, I usually don't use medicine, just crush them with my hands, while red spider mites are more troublesome. First, try to remove withered branches and leaves and small plants in the pot in early spring. After red spider mites appear, you don't need to use medicine at first, just spray with water strongly every day because red spider mites fear moisture. If they become widespread, you can use abamectin or other medicines specifically for red spider mites. Now I don't use medicine for red spider mites either, just spray with water twice a day, especially on the back.
Roses have other diseases and pests, but I haven't encountered them yet, so there's nothing to say. In general, to prevent diseases and pests in roses, the first point is to keep the roses strong, which improves their resistance, and the second point is to do a good job of prevention in early spring, both of which are very important. If you wait to treat the disease when it occurs, it will pretty much be a problem for the whole year.
By the way, rose pruning is also very important. The pruning from winter to early spring is especially crucial because whether the flowers in April to June are good depends on this. There are many methods of pruning, which you can look up online, and they are mostly similar. One thing to note is that the pruning in early spring must be done before the buds start to sprout, otherwise the flowers will not only bloom late, but also not be as large. There are generally two types of rose plant shapes: one with slightly more branches that can produce three to four flowers, making the plant look full and even with medium to large flowers that can bloom, half-bloom, and full-bloom simultaneously. The other is to keep only one to two main branches, with one to two flowers, which is not as good-looking, but the flowers can be very large. I usually choose the former. The shape of the rose plant also depends entirely on pruning.
Right, the climate here is typical of the Jiangnan region, and some things may not be applicable in other places. Also, I'm talking about potted roses. Planting roses in the ground is much simpler.
