How to determine if orchids are suitable for potting and analysis of orchid watering techniques.

How to Determine the Potting Status of Orchids After Planting

The survival of newly transplanted orchids hinges on the judgment of the potting status and scientific care. As one of China's top ten famous flowers, orchids are extremely sensitive to their growing environment, and improper care during the potting period can easily lead to root rot and death. This article will systematically analyze the key care techniques for orchids after transplanting, from plant status identification to water management.

Three Key Indicators for Determining the Potting Status of Orchids

Change in Leaf Surface Luster

Healthy potted orchids have waxy leaves with clear visible veins. Unpotted plants, due to hindered root absorption, will gradually lose their glossy texture and the edges will slightly curl. It is recommended to observe the leaf surface reflection every morning, and maintaining luster for more than 3 consecutive days can be considered a successful potting.

New Leaf Sprout Rate

During the potting period, the plant will pause new leaf growth to store nutrients. When the central new leaf grows by 0.5cm or more per day and the tip of the leaflet appears fresh and light yellow-green, it indicates that the root absorption function has been restored. Compare and record the length of new leaves before and after transplanting, and maintaining growth for 7 consecutive days meets the potting standard.

New Bud Sprouting Features

The appearance of a white conical projection at the base of the pseudobulb is a clear signal of completed potting. The new bud point should be full and elastic, with an average daily growth height of about 0.3cm. If the bud tip turns brown or growth stops, it is necessary to check the aeration of the planting material immediately.

Watering Tips for Unpotted Orchids

Quantitative Water Control Strategy

The moisture content of the planting material should be strictly controlled within the 30-40% range. Use the bamboo skewer method to test: insert a sterilized bamboo skewer into the planting material for 15 minutes, and only the tip 1cm should be slightly damp. Water 200ml every 12-15 days in spring and autumn, and reduce to every 7-10 days in summer.

Environmental Humidification Techniques

Water the base tray of the pot to form a mini water tray with 1cm of water, combined with misting in the morning and evening (avoiding the leaf core), to increase the air humidity to 65%-75%. It is recommended to use a hygrometer to monitor, and avoid excessive moisture that could cause diseases.

Watering Timing Selection

Watering should be completed before 10 am on sunny days to ensure at least 8 hours of ventilation during the day. Use 25°C warm water to slowly pour along the pot wall in winter, avoiding temperature differences that stimulate the roots. After each watering, use a fan on low speed to circulate the air for 2 hours.

By scientifically determining the potting status and precise water management, the survival rate of orchid transplants can be increased to over 90%. It is recommended to combine regular planting material testing (pH test once a month) and nutrient supplementation (applying slow-release fertilizer every quarter) to help the plant quickly establish a healthy root system.
