How to raise orchids
As a representative of elegant flowers, orchids are deeply loved by flower growers for their unique temperament. However, many novices often cause their plants to wither due to improper watering and poor environmental control during the maintenance process. This article systematically analyzes the scientific conservation methods of orchids and helps you master the core skills for making orchids thrive. Three core elements of orchid conservation 1. Soil and fertilization management Orchid roots require extremely high substrates. It is recommended to use a mixed substrate of pine bark + perlite + humus soil (4:3:3). The base fertilizer is slow-release sheep manure, and 5-8 grains are added around the basin wall every six months. During the peak growth season (March to May/September to November), spray special liquid fertilizer diluted 2000 times on the leaves every 10 days, and pay attention to avoid the high temperature period at noon. 2. Temperature control strategy The optimal growth temperature band for orchids is 18-24℃, and the temperature difference between day and night is controlled within 5℃ for the best effect. When it exceeds 30℃ in summer, it is necessary to turn on the circulating fan and lay water moss to cool down. In winter, when it is below 10℃, a heating pad should be used to maintain the root zone temperature. Special note: Tropical varieties such as Phalaenopsis need to be maintained above 15℃ in winter, while temperate varieties such as spring orchid need a vernalization period of around 5℃ to bloom normally. 3. It is recommended to set scattered light of 3000-5000lux, which can be detected by a professional photometer. East-facing window sill is the best place, and 50% sunshade net needs to be installed in summer. Observe the color of the leaves to determine whether the light is suitable: the yellow leaves indicate that the light is too strong, and the light needs to be replenished if the leaves are dark green and dull. Before flowering, light can be appropriately enhanced to 7000lux to promote flower bud differentiation. Scientific Guide to Orchids Watering Mastering the "Three Look Principles"(looking at the substrate, looking at the weather, and looking at the growth) is the key to watering. Keep the substrate moist 2-3 times a week in spring and autumn but no water accumulation. In summer, spray every morning and evening with thorough irrigation once every 3 days. In winter, 100-150ml of water is slowly injected along the basin edge every 10 days. It is recommended to use a long-spout pot for targeted watering to avoid soft rot caused by water in the heart of the leaves. Advanced tips: Insert a bamboo stick in the pot, pull it out and observe the humidity to determine the timing of watering.
Through systematic maintenance and management, regular pot changes (recommended once every two years) and pest and disease prevention (spraying garlic extract every month), even novices can cultivate high-quality orchids with bright leaves and blooming every year. Remember that observation is the best teacher, record the status of the plant regularly, and you will gradually master the unique language of conversation with orchids.
