How to Remove Alkaline Residue from Pottery

Use the edible vinegar removal method. First, clean the soil in the pot, then spray edible vinegar on the inner and outer walls of the pot, especially at the bottom holes and outer wall holes of the pots for growing orchids, making sure to spray more, especially on the sediment at the bottom. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then use a steel wire ball dipped in warm water to scrub the alkaline substances attached to the pot walls, bottom holes, and ventilation holes to remove them.

Using the edible vinegar removal method to remove white alkali

First, clean the soil in the pot, then spray edible vinegar on the inner and outer walls of the pot, especially at the bottom holes and outer wall holes of the pots for growing orchids, making sure to spray more, especially on the sediment at the bottom.

After letting it sit for 2-3 minutes, use a steel wire ball dipped in warm water to scrub the alkaline substances attached to the pot walls, bottom holes, and ventilation holes to remove them.

Removing white water alkali with a physical method

First, clean the soil from the inside and outside of the pot, then place the pot in the sun to dry for 20-30 minutes. Wait for the alkaline substances on the pot walls to dry, then use fine sandpaper to remove the alkaline substances.

Or you can use a steel wire ball to wipe off the alkaline substances on the outer wall of the pot. A note to orchid enthusiasts: Do not rub the outer wall of the purple sand pot too hard to avoid damaging the pot walls and affecting its appearance.

Using detergent to scrub white alkali

The method is: First, clean the soil from the inner and outer walls of the pot, then spray some detergent on the pot walls and use a soft cloth dipped in detergent to scrub the pot.

After repeated scrubbing, some of the alkaline substances stuck to the pot walls will be cleaned off. However, to thoroughly remove them, you will need to use acetic acid.

How to Prevent Alkaline Substances from Sticking to Pot Walls

1. In the northern regions, for potted plants and green plants, due to the alkaline nature of tap water, a small amount of ferric sulfate (500 times diluted) should be added regularly when watering plants, or a few drops of salt-free rice vinegar can be added to the watering water.

This can not only improve the alkalinity of the potting soil, making it slightly acidic, reducing or preventing the alkaline substances in the water from sticking to the pot walls, but also make the leaves of acid-loving plants look fresh and green, and grow better.

2. When fertilizing plants, use acidic or physiological acidic fertilizers. Fertilizers like ammonium bicarbonate and wood ash are alkaline and should not be used for acid-loving plants; using well-fermented organic fertilizers is more reliable than inorganic chemical fertilizers.

For example, using fermented rice water as a plant fertilizer is very beneficial for plant growth and can prevent alkaline substances from damaging the pot walls.
