Bulbophyllum pingtungensis
Bulbophyllum pingtungensis Plant Attributes
Chinese name: Big Flower Orchid, alias: Pingtung Stone Orchid, Dragon Beard Orchid Latin name, genus, origin distribution (T-W), Sri LankaBulbophyllum pingtungensis Plant Introduction
Scientific name: Bulbophyllum pingtungensis (Bulbophyllum wightii), flowering period: Autumn-Spring, flower longevity: 7-10 days, scent: offensive, sunlight: medium light, cultivation difficulty: easy.
Famous orchid merchant/collector He Fushun might be one of the earliest discoverers of this orchid. In academia, Professor Ying Shao-shun first described it as a new species [Pingtung Stone Orchid] in 1985, and Teacher Su Hongjie reported this species again in 1987, naming it [Big Flower Orchid] and considering it the same species as B. wightii, which is endemic to Sri Lanka. Comparing the existing literature, the (T-W) population differs slightly from B. wightii in Sri Lanka, and this kind of distribution jump is quite unusual. Therefore, we temporarily consider the (T-W) population as a different species. Although Teacher Ying may have originally upside-downed the flowers, making the original description of B. pingtungensis quite peculiar, the publication of this scientific name is still legal and must be continued.
