Chinese Name: LoulanAlias: Latin Name: Haworthia hybrid 'Mirrorball'Family and Genus: Liliaceae, Soft Leaf AloeDistribution: Horticultural hybrid varietyHaworthia 'Mirrorball' Plant Introduction
Loulan is a very beautiful horticultural hybrid variety that prefers semi-shade. During the growing season, the entire plant looks very attractive, and the potting soil should be kept slightly moist, as they enjoy higher humidity, but this humidity is only suitable when the root system is fully developed.
Friends should note that keeping the soil moist without proper root growth can lead to root rot. The method for root development is to keep the soil slightly moist, plant the plant with dried wound in a shady and well-ventilated area, and wait for new roots to appear. Only after new roots have emerged can water be gradually increased, along with more sunlight. If the plant remains in the shade for too long, it will deform and elongate, and it will take a long time to restore it.
In the summer dormancy period, due to high temperatures, the plant grows slowly or stops growing, and the bottom leaves will gradually dry out. The potting soil should be kept moderately dry throughout the summer, with a small amount of water given at the edge of the pot each month, avoiding the leaf heart. High temperatures can cause the core to rot. The plant needs to maintain a slow or stopped growth with the necessary water, and it is not advisable to let the plant go into dormancy without water due to high temperatures, as it will take a long time to recover. During dormancy, some leaves may lose moisture and nutrients, leading to dry and shriveled leaves from the bottom to the entire plant. Due to slow growth and high temperatures, the leaves of the plant do not show much green during the summer, as each season has its own beauty.
In winter, the coldest season in Huangshan, Loulan grows slowly in the cold. Throughout the winter, the plant is kept in a glass jar with slightly moist potting soil, watered a little each month. A layer of plastic film is placed on top of the glass jar to retain heat and increase humidity. Daytime sunlight can raise the temperature inside the jar, and the air humidity is also high, allowing Loulan to grow slowly and the leaves to look beautiful and charming during this season. Loulan can be propagated by cross-pollination and播种, as it loves to produce offsets. It can also be propagated by cutting the top to trigger new buds, but the author has not tried this method, as they are reluctant to do so, waiting for the offsets to naturally separate before dividing the plant. The flowering period of Loulan is in spring, and if not pollinated, the flower stem can be cut to avoid depleting the plant's nutrients. Growing Haworthia requires patience, and Loulan is considered a relatively fast-growing variety. Below is a picture of the ordinary small-leaf Loulan cultivated by the author, with beautiful leaf colors under sunlight, and if shaded for too long, the leaves will be green.
