The steps for repotting orchids, key techniques for orchid care.

How to raise orchids when changing pots

Changing orchids is an important maintenance link to promote the healthy growth of plants. Appropriate pot changing operations can not only improve the root growth environment, but also effectively prevent pests and diseases. This article systematically explains the five core operating points for the entire process of orchid pot changing, from substrate preparation to post-management, and helps you master the scientific method of orchid pot changing. 1. Substrate preparation and root treatment 1.1 Special substrate preparation uses water moss, tree bark, and volcanic rock to mix in a ratio of 2:5:3 to ensure that the substrate has both water retention and air permeability. Before use, it needs to be disinfected with high temperature steam or exposed to the sun for 3 days to kill eggs and bacteria. 1.2 Scientific method of pruning roots After shaking off the old substrate, rinse the roots with running water. Keep 3-5 taproots during pruning and cut off black rot roots and empty roots. Keep a healthy crystal head, and the incision must be flat and free of burrs. 2. Disinfection and sterilization treatment 2.1 Drug selection criteria recommend using carbendazim 500 times solution or potassium permanganate 0.1% solution to soak the roots for 15 minutes. The treated roots need to be dried to a semi-dry state (about 1-2 hours) to avoid wound infection. 3. Scientific pot filling techniques 3.1 The planting material filling method adopts the "three-layer filling method": the bottom layer is covered with 3cm foam blocks, the middle layer is covered with mixed matrix, and the upper layer is covered with fine particles. Hold the false bulb in position, gently tap the basin wall while filling the soil to ensure that the root system stretches naturally. 3.2 Root fixing water is used for irrigation with trapped water at about 25℃ and slowly poured through along the edge of the basin. If the substrate is wet, watering can be delayed for 3 days, and the moisture content of the substrate should be maintained at 30% before new roots grow. 4. Maintenance and management after basin replacement 4.1 Key points of environmental control should keep the temperature at 18-25℃ and the humidity at 60%-70%. Avoid direct sunlight for the first two weeks and use a sunshade net to filter 50% of the light. Ventilate for 2-3 hours a day to prevent the growth of fungi. 4.2 Nutrient supplement timing Start fertilization after the new leaves are unfolded, dilute it 2000 times with special orchid fertilizer, and spray it on the leaves every 10 days. Pay attention to applying thin fertilizer frequently to avoid burning roots.

Through standardized pot changing operations, the survival rate of orchids can be increased to more than 95%. It is recommended to change the pot every 2-3 years to combine seasonal changes (best in spring/autumn) to create a sustainable and healthy growth environment for the plants. Master these core skills and your orchids will bloom more beautifully.
