Attention Points for Flower and Tree Cutting Propagation
The editor will talk about the planting content of flower propagation, the attention points for flower and tree cutting propagation, and the editor will introduce them next.
Most flowers and trees can be propagated by cutting, but there are also many precautions to take. Mastering these key points will ensure successful cutting propagation of flowers and trees.
Selecting Cutting Materials
The parent plant for collecting cuttings should have good varieties, vigorous growth, and be free from diseases and pests. Old and declining plants should not be selected as the parent plant. On the same plant, cuttings should be selected from the upper middle part, sunny and strong branches with short internodes, full buds, and robust leaves. On the same branch, for hard branch cuttings, the middle and lower parts of the branch should be selected because they store more nutrients, while the top part is often not fully developed. However, for trees with regular shapes, such as Dragon柏 and Cedar, the top part with the terminal bud is better, as the resulting cutting trees will have straight trunks and a beautiful shape. For heel cuttings, the overly tender top should be cut off, while for flowers like chrysanthemums, the tender tips are used for cuttings.
Handling Cuttings
Propagation should be carried out immediately after cutting the cuttings, especially for leaf cuttings, to prevent the leaves from wilting and affecting root growth. For cuttings of roses, hibiscus, and Chinese trumpet creepers cut in late autumn, due to the lack of immediate cutting conditions, the cuttings can be tied into bundles and buried in moist sand in a flowerpot, placed in a room with a temperature of 0-5 degrees Celsius. In winter, care should be taken not to let the sand become too dry, and cuttings can be planted in early spring of the following year. For roses and other flowering trees, cuttings can also be propagated in a small plastic greenhouse in winter. For cacti and other succulent plants, the cuttings should be placed in a ventilated area to dry for about a week before planting, otherwise, they may rot. For flowers like begonias and oleanders, the cuttings can be soaked in clean water first, and once roots appear, they can be directly planted in pots. For roses and米兰, the bottom of the cuttings can be dipped in a vitamin B injection, then left for a minute or two to absorb the solution before inserting them into coarse sand, which can promote root growth. For moisture-rich plant cuttings like hydrangeas and downy begonias, dipping the bottom in some wood ash can prevent rotting after planting.
Propagation Medium
Except for water propagation, cuttings should be inserted into a certain medium. There are many types of media, including garden soil, potting soil, yellow mountain soil, orchid soil, rice husk ash, vermiculite, and river sand. They require the following environmental conditions: good water permeability, certain water retention capacity, easy to warm up, and good insulation. For more relaxed flowering plants, they can generally be planted in garden soil or potting soil, while acid-loving flowers can be planted in yellow mountain soil or orchid soil. For trees that are difficult to root, they should be planted in rice husk ash, vermiculite, or river sand.
Post-Planting Management
After planting, it is necessary to strengthen management and create good conditions for the cuttings to root. Generally, cuttings require the soil to be moist and well-ventilated. A glass plate or a plastic film cover can be placed on the pot or bed to maintain temperature and humidity. Small bricks should be placed under the cover to allow air to flow in. In summer and early autumn, the pots should be placed in the shade during the day and outside at night. In early spring, late autumn, and winter, when the temperature is not enough, they can be placed in a warm place or greenhouse, but temperature and humidity must be regulated. Later, depending on the speed of root growth, light exposure should be gradually increased.
