Hibiscus is a shrub or small tree belonging to the Malvaceae family, with the scientific name Hibiscus syriacus or Althaea syriaca. Native to East Asia, it has beautiful flowers and is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. It can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall, usually with low branching and a pagoda-like shape. The flowers resemble mallows, ranging from white, pink-purple to purple, with a generally deep red base; some varieties have double petals. The Hypericum calycinum of the Clusiaceae family is also called hibiscus.
