Honeysuckle Spring Seed Propagation Techniques
The editor will share with you the experience of flower propagation in regards to honeysuckle, specifically the spring seed propagation technique. Next, the editor will introduce it.
Harvest black fruits in January. Stack them in a pile 30 centimeters thick, let them ripen for 5-7 days, then wash and clean the peel and flesh in clean water, and place them in a shaded area to dry. Avoid direct sunlight, then remove the chaff seeds and store them for later use.
Seed Treatment: Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water at 35-40°C for 24 hours, then mix them with 2-3 times the amount of moist sand, cover with a plastic film, and place them in a warm place to germinate. When 50% of the seeds have cracked, they can be sown.
Sowing Period: Spring sowing can start in early March.
Bed Preparation Before Sowing: Prepare the seedbed by turning the soil, generally 50 centimeters deep, applying sufficient base fertilizer, applying 6000-7500 kilograms of base fertilizer per 667 square meters, 40-50 kilograms of ammonium bicarbonate, rake finely and level the soil, and remove any remaining weeds. To prevent underground pests, 1.5-2 kilograms of carbaryl powder or 0.15-0.25 kilograms of phoxim emulsion can be scattered per 667 square meters. Some zinc sulfate or ferrous sulfate can be applied to prevent diseases during the seedling stage. The bed can be 1 meter wide, 20 centimeters high, and 10-15 meters long.
Sowing: Use broadcast sowing on the entire bed, with a seed rate of 1.0-1.2 kilograms per 667 square meters. First, level the bed surface, water thoroughly, wait for the water to seep in, then sprinkle the soaked or stored sand seeds mixed with an additional amount of sand evenly on the bed, cover with fine sand soil 0.5-0.7 centimeters thick, then cover with a straw mat or plastic mulch.
Post-Sowing Management: The management of water after sowing is very important, as it directly affects the germination rate. Since honeysuckle seeds are tiny, before the seedlings emerge, it is essential to prevent the soil from cracking. Check daily, spray water once in the morning or evening with a watering can under the straw mat, and spot-spray under the plastic mulch, that is, spray water on the areas lacking water. When about 30% of the seedlings have emerged, remove the covering material. After all seedlings have emerged, water frequently to keep the bed moist. During the seedling growth stage, regularly remove weeds, loosen the soil, and water. Depending on the seedling condition, nitrogen fertilizer can be applied, with 7-10 kilograms per 667 square meters.
When the seedlings are 15-20 centimeters tall, pinch the tips to encourage new branches. Continue this process 2-3 times, and by July, each plant can have 4-8 branches. The seedlings can be transplanted in autumn.
