Geranium Sowing Image and Text Record
You may not be familiar with the experience related to geraniums. Let's take a look at the geranium sowing image and text record together!
Buying geranium seedlings online can be expensive, and many gardening enthusiasts want to sow geraniums but are deterred by a lack of experience. Here, we provide a record of a gardening enthusiast's geranium sowing experience as a reference for those who want to sow geraniums.
Geranium seeds are among the most expensive I've bought, costing 15 yuan for 10 seeds. However, this money has turned into beautiful leaves and flowers in no time, which is truly worth it! Sown on March 25th, after four months, I've concluded that geraniums are an excellent choice for beginners! They germinate and grow quickly, are shade and drought tolerant, and super robust, just like weeds.
On March 25th, a beautiful sunny day, perfect for spring sowing. I sowed 25 seeds of five varieties: deep salmon, salmon, apple blossom, white, and mixed-color hanging geraniums. The seeds are large (of course, not as large as nasturtiums, but they are big compared to other herbaceous flowers), wheat-like golden yellow, and beautiful~
March 29th. Four days after sowing, the cotyledons emerged. Two fat little leaves, looking strong and vigorous~
April 20th. One month after sowing, the golden yellow seeds have turned into bright green little leaves. Geraniums are indeed a very beautiful plant. Even without the flowers, the shape and color of the leaves are very attractive.
Round, with wavy edges, and a deep green color. Exquisite appearance~
May 26th. Most of the seedlings have developed 4 or 5 true leaves. This batch of seeds is of excellent quality, with a germination rate of almost 100%, uniform germination, and consistent growth rate.
Transplanted two large seedlings into black soft pots
Like me, many people use transparent disposable plastic cups when sowing, and only transplant the seedlings when they have 6 or 7 true leaves. This is not very good! Why? Because as the seedlings grow, the root system grows rapidly, and the roots can be seen through the transparent cup walls. Similarly, light can also shine through the cup walls onto the plant's roots, which can hinder root development. This is called "phototropism." Therefore, once the seedlings can be transplanted, you should move them to a dark pot as soon as possible. Or, lazy people can wrap the transparent cups with black tape~~~
Of course, you can also sow directly in seedling trays, but each hole is very small, so you have to be careful. For those like me who are less meticulous, they are not used after one time.
June 28th. From the end of May until now, the growth rate of the seedlings has slowed down. They used to change every day, but this month, they haven't grown many new leaves. I suspect it's due to ventilation and sunlight——at first, I said that small geraniums are shade and drought tolerant, which means they are very easy to survive. However, this is not conducive to healthy growth.
Information sources will say that geraniums do not need much water and should be kept dry and then wet. Therefore, when on the balcony, I only water them once a week. (But after placing them outdoors, they still remain very healthy despite heavy rain almost every two days!) It is also said that geraniums can live in semi-shaded environments, but insufficient sunlight will prevent flowering.
Unfortunately, my balcony, although facing south, has almost no direct sunlight in summer. It's time to move them~~~ I bought a pile of small red plastic pots, 2 yuan each, cheap as anything. Placed in the outdoor wooden trough, it's just right~
