Many people are very fond of growing flowers, enjoying beautiful green plants, and having potted plants with continuously blooming flowers at home. No matter where they are placed, they are very versatile. However, in the cold winter, usually blooming flowers like roses and snowflake flowers begin to quiet down, and orchids and peonies stop blooming. There is one kind of flower that is different — it blooms in the coldest time, from winter to April or May of the following year. Its blooming period is relatively long, and it is the camellia. Moreover, there are many varieties, such as Xiangfei camellia, Hualu Zhen, Hongchi Dan, Dongfang Liang, and so on.
Camellia flowers are also relatively large, with double petals layered on top of each other. The flower colors are rich, including elegant white, pink, bright red, and various mixed colors. When in bloom, the leaves are lush and green, the flowers are fresh, elegant, and grand. The flowers are larger than roses and more beautiful than orchids. They also have a faint fragrance. To exaggerate a bit, they are even more durable and visually appealing than peonies. Now there are more and more varieties of camellias, and some have very attractive fragrances. Keeping a pot indoors will fill the room with a strong, distinctive fragrance that is refreshing and uplifting. So, how should camellia potted plants be maintained?
There are three key points to planting camellias: large flowers, long blooming period, and blooming even in cold weather.
1. When you first bring the camellia potted plant home, place it in a semi-shaded, well-ventilated area, and let it adapt for about a week. Do not place it in direct sunlight, as this will cause the leaves to wilt and the plant to look unhealthy.
2. If you are just starting to care for it, do not rush to prune the roots or change the potting soil. Plant it with the original soil in a slightly larger pot. Prepare some decomposed leaf soil, river sand garden soil, some slow-release fertilizer, and some granular soil, or peat soil mixed with others. Place some organic fertilizer at the bottom of the pot as a base fertilizer.
How to cultivate camellias
This type of potting soil will not easily compact, providing better aeration and drainage. As long as the potting soil is fertile and loose, the plant will grow better later on. With good, loose, and fertile potting soil, the plant may only be a small seedling, about 30 centimeters tall at the beginning. Within half a year, it can suddenly grow to over one meter tall and even fill with flower buds.
3. When caring for camellias in winter, if you want them to bloom earlier, you can place them on a sunny indoor balcony where the temperature is higher. They will bloom earlier if the indoor temperature reaches 20 degrees. However, when maintaining them indoors, you need to ensure plenty of sunlight and maintain a certain level of humidity. If the air is dry and humidity is insufficient, the flower buds may wither.
By caring for camellias this way, their branches and leaves will become more lush, the flowers will be more vibrant and bright, the leaves will turn dark green and shiny, and they will grow more eye-catching and lush. Moreover, their growth rate will accelerate, and within a few short months, they will produce more branches and new stems.
