Pruning of Hybrid Tea (HT) roses in the Guangdong and Guangxi regions (Figure)

Two Guang Areas Large Flower Chinese Rose

Abstract: This article discusses knowledge about蔷薇 Chinese rose, large flower Chinese rose (HT) in the Two Guang areas, and will introduce it to everyone next.

Many flower friends often tell me: Chinese roses are not easy to grow, my Chinese rose only blooms well in spring, and it doesn't bloom well in other times...

In fact, Chinese roses are easy to grow, and very few people can grow them to death. Most of them are just not in good growing condition. With fertile, loose, and breathable soil, proper pruning, and fertilization, Chinese roses can bloom every month. However, pruning is not擅长 by most people, including me.

Looking for information, I found that pruning methods are all for northern Chinese rose dormant areas: dormant in winter and prune heavily to survive the winter, sprout new buds in spring... But my home is in southern Guangxi, the climate is very different from the north, the lowest temperature in winter is 5 degrees, and Chinese roses do not dormant in winter. This will cause some differences in the plant's growth time and habits. No choice, I had to refer to the planting information in the north and usually exchanged experiences with flower friends in the Two Guang areas, summarizing pruning and fertilizing times suitable for the local environment, which may be referred to by friends with similar regional environments.

The coldest period of the Two Guang winter is between the solar terms of Xiao Han and Da Han. If you are worried that you won't have time or the weather will be bad and unable to operate at that time, you can do it half a month before Xiao Han, and it should not be postponed, as it will warm up quickly after Da Han.

Chinese rose pruning methods are divided into three types: light pruning (weak剪), moderate pruning (medium剪), and severe pruning (strong剪).

Most home-grown Chinese roses are large flower Chinese roses (HT), flowering Chinese roses, and miniature Chinese roses. Flowering and miniature Chinese roses are simple to prune, just cut off the flower bud bundle and flower bud after flowering (Figure 1). The pruning of large flower Chinese roses is more complex, and the Chinese roses that flower friends say are not easy to grow are large flower Chinese roses.

Weak pruning: Generally done after flowering, pruning the branches according to their length to 1-3 buds below the flower bud.

Weak pruning is used throughout the flowering growth period, pruning immediately after each flower fades to avoid consuming nutrients and promote the rapid germination of new buds and flowering. Long-term weak pruning will make the plant's shape thin and long.

Medium pruning: Medium pruning requires cutting the plant to half its height and cutting off weak and blind branches. Medium pruning can achieve the effect of shrinking the plant's shape and is a commonly used pruning method. Potted seedlings and some varieties that are not resistant to pruning are not suitable for using medium pruning throughout the growing period.

Severe pruning: Only retain the branches 10-20 centimeters above the ground.

It is generally done in winter dormancy in the north. Strongly pruned Chinese roses can grow strong branches from the remaining main stems in spring, and grow into a strong Chinese rose that blooms standard flowers.

There is an even more skilled Japanese Chinese rose master who prunes more severely in winter, leaving only the base of the potted Chinese rose stems (cutting off all branches above 5 centimeters from the ground), which is highly sought after by Chinese rose enthusiasts.

In warm southern winter areas where Chinese roses do not dormant, such severe pruning is not suitable. Without enough nutrients accumulated through dormancy, severe pruning may not necessarily stimulate enough strong branches, and sometimes it may even make the plant weaker.

In areas with minimum temperatures above 5 degrees in the south, the degree of severe pruning should be lighter, retaining branches about 20 centimeters above the ground. The timing of severe pruning is from the Spring Festival to before the beginning of spring. If pruned too early, the temperature is still low and the Chinese roses have not yet entered dormancy, resulting in不够健壮 buds and poor growth. If pruned too late, the Chinese roses are in their growing season, with strong apical dominance, and only 1-2 buds will sprout at the top of the main stem, making the plant thin and unfull, with too few flowering branches.

Severe pruning is not necessary every year. It is suitable for use when the plant ages or when the plant shape is too large or too thin and needs to be reshaped. For plants with strong branches, mostly branches less than 3 years old, and satisfactory plant shapes, a moderate pruning for reshaping can be done before the beginning of spring, and branches older than 3 years should be cut off.

I usually use a combination of weak and medium pruning throughout the growing and flowering period except for winter.

It is warm here in winter, and Chinese roses do not dormant, just the growing and flowering period is longer. Although it is hot in summer, it is mostly rainy, and during rainy periods, the temperature is cool, and Chinese rose buds are more vigorous. If you force summer dormancy according to the information, you will find that the flower buds grow more. Except for autumn (September to October), in dry and hot years, the growth of Chinese roses may stop, but the growth and flowering of Chinese roses throughout the year is normal, with an average of one batch of flowers every month or so, as long as proper pruning and timely top dressing are done.

For each batch of flowers, there will be a time difference between the first and the last flower, sometimes up to more than a week. When the last flower fades and the new buds from the first flower have already grown long, it will affect the uniformity of the next batch of flowers.

For flowers that fade first, I use a weak pruning method, mostly just cutting off the flower bud, and sometimes cutting off a couple of bud points if the branch is too long. After the last flower fades, I prune all the strong branches, keeping the branch heights as consistent as possible, and修剪 off all the new buds that have already grown on the previously pruned branches. Generally, half of the branch length is pruned, higher branches are pruned more, and lower branches are pruned less. At the same time, I prune the branches that cross inward from the base, and also prune some of the short blind branches from the base. If the new buds have the potential to grow inward or cross, I immediately remove them so they don't grow into branches. (Pruning methods see Figures 3-6)

After pruning, you should immediately top-dress to ensure sufficient nutrients (G-Y), so that Chinese roses can grow more and stronger new branches.

After pruning, I immediately apply nitrogen fertilizer, water fertilizer on sunny days, and sprinkle urea granules on rainy days. About a week after new buds sprout, I dig around the pot to bury the purchased organic and inorganic compound fertilizer granules, with a 25-centimeter pot using about 15 milliliters. If using organic fertilizers like chicken manure, it should be laid on top of the pot 2-3 days after using nitrogen fertilizer.

Mostly it rains here, and my flowers are placed outdoors, so I am more accustomed to using solid fertilizers and use liquid fertilizers less. If using liquid fertilizers as top dressing, it is necessary to water once a week.

It is not suitable to fertilize after the branches have formed buds, especially concentrated fertilizers, as this can easily cause the flower buds to die. On hot summer sunny days, try not to fertilize. If the potted plants can be rained on, applying solid fertilizers, especially a layer of organic fertilizers, the day before it rains is beneficial for new buds to sprout in the cool rainy weather.

The above is the related explanation of pruning (Figure) of large flower Chinese roses (HT) in the Two Guang areas, hoping to bring a little help to your life!
