Recently, I've seen many flower friends' gardens affected by powdery mildew, and I was still庆幸 that neither mine nor the garden of my friend Tuotuo had it, with all the flowers healthy. However, just yesterday, in the afternoon and evening, half of the flowers in the garden developed powdery mildew!!! Including roses, shrubs, perennials, and aquatic plants, regardless of variety.

In the morning, when we went to the garden ready to work hard, we were completely shocked. We treat the flowers as if they were our own children, caring for them every day, and suddenly there was such a large-scale outbreak of powdery mildew, which made us very, very sad and anxious.

So I immediately drove back home, first looked for a gardening encyclopedia, which was very general and not helpful at all. Then I quickly found the phone numbers of Teacher Gao from the Rose Garden, Dr. Dingliang from the Breeding Base, and Liu's Garden Manager Dongsheng, and called them one by one in detail. Finally, I felt much more at ease. It turns out that powdery mildew is not impossible to solve or prevent, and there are also many parts that need attention in daily life. As long as these are done well, there should be no problem.

Here are the comprehensive suggestions from the three of them provided in detail:

1. The reasons for powdery mildew and how to improve and prevent it in watering methods.

The reasons include high temperature and humidity, and an even more important reason is that you should never water at night, especially by spraying!!! This is the main reason why our garden has powdery mildew, because we always water at night and use the spraying method.

Both Teacher Gao and Dingliang mentioned this part. As soon as I said there was a large-scale powdery mildew, they immediately asked if I watered at night. Because watering at night, especially spraying, the water on the leaves cannot dry and evaporate quickly at night, leading to too much humidity and easily causing fungal issues like powdery mildew. The best time to water is at 7 or 8 in the morning, and no later than 9, so that the sun can quickly evaporate the water on the leaves during the day.

Moreover, for sauna weather, the spraying method is not suitable. The most appropriate method is direct root watering or seepage, which will not get water on the leaves. Both Teacher Gao and the Breeding Base use this method, so they can largely avoid powdery mildew.

Spraying or watering plants is only suitable for supplementing moisture after spring windy weather. In Beijing's sauna weather, the humidity is at least 70% during the day, which is very unsuitable for spraying water on the leaves.

I remember reading a foreign gardening book a while ago, and there was a special mention about the automatic irrigation system, suggesting using seepage pipes instead of micro-spray pipes to avoid getting the leaves wet. I thought it was hard to understand at the time because I thought the flowers would like to be sprayed. Now I finally understand. The humidity of the sauna weather already makes the plants uncomfortable, and spraying water, even in the morning, will only make them more uncomfortable.

2. The use of medicine and frequency after powdery mildew occurs.

According to the suggestions of the three: if it has already occurred, you can no longer use chlorothalonil alone because it is only suitable for prevention, not treatment. Benomyl is also not good, and its effect is even worse than chlorothalonil.

The most suitable formula (recommended by all three) is as follows: After occurrence, the first spray: Triadimefon (also known as Sanzhaocopper, only domestic) + chlorothalonil (imported is better) mixed together, a slightly higher concentration is fine. Four days later, spray again with the same formula. Continue this method for about 3 to 4 times, and it should be basically cured.

3. Suitable spraying time.

The evening is the most suitable time, as it avoids the hot sun quickly drying the water on the medicine, causing uneven distribution of the active ingredients on the leaves and easily burning the leaves. After spraying in the evening, water the next morning to rinse off the white medicine powder on the leaves. Don't worry about this affecting the efficacy, as Dingliang said that maintaining it for 4 hours is enough. According to the old man at the agricultural supply store, after rinsing it, the medicine enters the soil and can further be absorbed by the plants.

4. Preventive spraying method.

After using the treatment formula for 3 to 4 times (about a month), you need to change to a new formula. You cannot continue using the old formula. The new formula can use chlorothalonil and methylthiophanate-methyl mixed together, continuing for a month, about once a week. After a month, switch to another broad-spectrum medicine, as there are many choices at the agricultural supply store, both imported and domestic. Just keep switching every month until after October 1st, when the weather cools down, and you can stop.

At night, we have applied this formula to all the flowers, and tomorrow morning, we will get up at 7 to water without being lazy. I will report back on the effect. I hope it can help flower friends with powdery mildew at home!
