Pruning Methods for Chinese Roses
Do you know about these? Common knowledge of flower cultivation, especially about Chinese roses, pruning methods of Chinese roses, detailed content will be shared next.
After the column recently reported on the method of rejuvenating pruning for Chinese roses, many readers called to consult. "Teacher Wang Sheng talked about the pruning methods for Chinese roses in different growth periods, can you introduce how to prune different types of Chinese roses?" Many readers raised this question. The reporter interviewed landscape plant cultivation and disease expert, senior engineer Wang Sheng again on this issue.
"For Chinese roses, no matter what kind of pruning, two principles should be followed. First, ensure the tree shape is aesthetically pleasing, by cutting off long branches, diseased branches, dead branches, intersecting branches, and parallel branches to balance the tree's vigor, conducive to ventilation and light penetration. Second, increase the nutritional area, increase the amount of nutritional branches. Properly shorten or cut off the sprawling branches, weak inner branches; promptly remove sprouts and buds from grafted seedlings; promptly remove buds from one-year-old seedlings to promote stem growth; for perennial Chinese rose old branches or current-year flowering branches, adopt 'strong branches lightly pruned, weak branches heavily pruned' to promote vigorous growth."
Wang Sheng introduced that for large-flowered clustering Chinese roses, due to different varieties and branching habits, they can be divided into erect, spreading, and semi-spreading types. Erect and semi-spreading varieties tend to form more old age and have longer tree ages, while spreading varieties have relatively shorter tree ages. In pruning methods, the shortening method should be determined based on the branching power of the variety. Thin out diseased branches, weak branches, inward branches, and dense branches according to the tree shape; carefully cut parallel branches and intersecting branches. Especially for spreading varieties, do not easily cut the branches on the back. When leaving buds, pay attention to leaving lateral buds to promote the formation of strong branches.
For clustering Chinese roses (including profuse-flowering Chinese roses), due to their strong clustering nature and high flowering rate, pruning during the growing period should remove残花, and eliminate diseased, dead branches; during the dormant period, pruning should remove non-flowering branches, heavily shorten smaller main branches, moderately shorten lateral branches, and thin out dense branches. The pruning principles for dwarf clustering Chinese roses are the same.
Miniature Chinese rose pruning is divided into natural and formal styles. Depending on the plant's growth and environment, the formal style mainly controls the minimum plant height, removes all dead, diseased, and damaged branches, eliminates tangled branches, and shortens any branches that disrupt the plant's symmetry. The natural style refers to removing 1 to 3 of the strongest branches and then lightly shortening the remaining branches.
Vine-type Chinese roses are divided into climbing and trailing types. Trailing Chinese roses tend to produce more and stronger sturdy branches from the base than climbing ones. If not pruned and guided, the resulting stems and vines can intertwine, leading to poor ventilation, uneven light, and a large number of diseases and pests. Tying should be done in the summer and autumn after the plant flowers, leaving all lateral branches uncut, cutting off diseased and dead branches, and in the winter dormant period, lightly shortening the old flowering branches every year. Depending on the variety, if branches are too dense, some old branches can be cut, and the cut should be left with a饱满芽 facing upwards.
For climbing Chinese roses, pruning is not necessary in the early stages, only thinning dead, diseased, and weak branches. When forming a large shrub, it should be pruned regularly. First, cut the tip of the main branches, cut the lateral branches in front of the upward buds, and leave the longer lateral branches for flowering treatment; second, if the plant base looks sparse or has space, select 1 to 2 of the oldest flowering branches and cut the stems to promote vigorous new branch growth, continuing this method of pruning every year.
For tree-like Chinese roses, in winter or early spring, all branches should be pruned to 1/3 of their length to prevent the plant from being top-heavy. The specific pruning method is to cut off dead, diseased, damaged, and weak branches, reasonably remove intersecting and parallel branches, then moderately shorten the main growth branches, and lightly shorten the lateral branches on the main branches. During the growing period, it is necessary to剪去开过花的衰老枝条,保留当年生的新枝条.
