Prevention and Treatment of Rose Powdery Mildew
Sharing early symptoms of rose powdery mildew in the green plant and flower category. Corrections are welcome if there are any mistakes!
It is often said that it rains frequently during Qingming Festival, but this year, the rain has come much earlier, as it has been raining for nearly a month in March. The weather is about to switch to a cloudy and rainy pattern again. Although spring rain is as precious as oil, it is not good for roses to have continuous rain. With these consecutive cloudy and rainy days, the probability of roses contracting powdery mildew and black spot disease has significantly increased. In the coming period, everyone should focus on preventing and treating rose powdery mildew and black spot disease.
Early Symptoms of Rose Powdery Mildew
Recently, many flower enthusiasts have consulted about the curling of their rose leaves.
If your roses show inward curling of leaves, you should be cautious. This condition is often due to rose powdery mildew.
We can carefully observe the leaves of the rose. If the leaves are wrinkled, twisted, slightly inward curling, and there is white powder on the back of the leaves, it can be confirmed that the rose has powdery mildew and requires timely treatment.
Powdery mildew can infect both young and old leaves of roses. In severe cases, the white powder will cover the leaves and flower buds, severely affecting the normal growth of roses.
Prevention and Treatment of Rose Powdery Mildew
Among the many diseases of roses, powdery mildew is one of the more difficult to treat. Therefore, we should aim to prevent it as much as possible.
In the rapid growth period of spring, fertilization should avoid excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer. If there is too much nitrogen, the leaves of roses will be tender and their resistance to powdery mildew will be weak. Before flower buds appear, top dressing is recommended with a balanced fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Regular maintenance should keep the environment well-ventilated, especially during cloudy and rainy days when the air humidity is high. Pathogens usually hide in the soil before the disease occurs, so you can sprinkle some fungicide granules, such as small powder medicine, on the pot surface to greatly reduce the incidence of the disease.
In consecutive sunny days, it is recommended to spray zinc omethoate and carbendazim once every 15 days to prevent powdery mildew and black spot disease. When there is continuous rain, a fungicide should be applied after the rain stops for prevention.
If roses are found to have powdery mildew, the affected leaves should be removed first to prevent further spread of the pathogen. Then, a fungicide should be sprayed thoroughly. You can use Xianhua's special fungicide for powdery mildew, or spray the entire plant with products like Shigao, Lunasen, etc., for treatment.
Since the treatment of powdery mildew is relatively difficult, it is recommended to spray the fungicide every other day for three consecutive times. Early detection and treatment usually result in a cure after three applications. If the powdery mildew is severe and the conventional fungicide is not effective, you can use lime sulfur spray. Lime sulfur, as a strong alkali agent, is quite effective against powdery mildew, and usually, two to three consecutive applications can cure it. However, lime sulfur can burn the leaves when used at high temperatures, so it is recommended to dilute it to 800-1000 times before use.
