Winter is a relatively suitable season for purchasing rhododendron bare root seedlings. So, what should you do after receiving the bare root rhododendron seedlings? The other day, a flower enthusiast asked if the pot they used to plant the bare root rhododendron was too small or too large.

I will share with you all the planting methods and precautions for bare root rhododendron seedlings today!

Rhododendron bare root seedling planting method

Before talking about the planting method of bare root rhododendron seedlings, let's first discuss the planting time. Bare root rhododendron is not suitable for planting all year round but only suitable for planting in winter and early spring.

In early spring, before the rhododendron germinates, you can plant it bare root. However, by mid-March, when the rhododendron has germinated, it is no longer suitable for bare root planting, as the new buds can easily wither. Therefore, you should grasp the timing of purchasing bare root seedlings.

After receiving the bare root seedlings, the first thing we need to do is soak the roots to replenish water. Even though it's winter or early spring, the bare root rhododendron may become dehydrated during shipping. So, the first thing to do when you receive the seedlings is to soak them in clean water or root-promoting powder water. The soaking time is about 30 minutes, and only the roots of the rhododendron need to be soaked, not the branches.

After the branches have absorbed enough water, take them out, dry the surface moisture, and then you can plant them.

For planting bare root rhododendron in a pot, first, choose a suitable pot. The size of the pot should be based on whether it can fit the roots. If the rhododendron has many branches, you can use a slightly larger pot. If there are few branches, a pot that can just fit the roots is fine, do not use a too large pot.

When planting, first add some rhododendron planting soil to the bottom of the pot. For the formula of the potting soil, you can refer to the book "How to Grow Rhododendron from Scratch" written by Green Plant Enthusiast Network.

After adding the planting soil to the bottom of the pot, you also need to add some well-fermented sheep manure or chicken manure as a base fertilizer. Then, cover it with a layer of planting soil to separate the fertilizer from the rhododendron roots. Place the rhododendron seedling in the pot, fill the soil, and make sure to straighten the seedling during the process to avoid tilting the plant.

After planting, water thoroughly and then place it in a windless, sunny location. There is no need to water until the potting soil dries out.
