Characteristics of Fertilizing Chinese Roses Throughout the Seasons

Today's tip sharing: Let's explore the knowledge about the characteristics of fertilizing Chinese roses throughout the seasons, and have a look together!

Fertilizing in the morning before 10 a.m. and in the afternoon after 3 to 4 p.m. is better. On hot days, fertilize in the early morning and evening. The characteristics of fertilizing throughout the seasons are as follows:

Spring fertilizer: If the base fertilizer applied in autumn and winter of the previous year is sufficient and of good quality, usually no spring fertilizer is needed. Adult plants only need to apply nitrogen fertilizer once when flower buds appear.

Summer fertilizer: Apply fertilizer once after the first batch of flowers bloom and before the second batch of flower buds germinate to replenish the consumption of the first batch of flowers and promote the differentiation of the second batch of flower buds and the growth of summer shoots, laying the foundation for autumn flowers. Due to the high temperature, abundant rainfall, and high humidity in summer, excessive fertilizer can cause the plant to grow excessively, which is not conducive to flower bud differentiation, so it is necessary to use it moderately.

Autumn fertilizer: In August to October, apply 1 to 2 times of light fertilizers mainly containing phosphorus and potassium before the second full bloom and after pruning. It is best to use 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate for root external topdressing. When the flower bud starts to show red, fertilization should be stopped immediately. Avoid applying excessive nitrogen fertilizer before flowering to prevent excessive growth of flower buds, thick petals, malformed flowers, dull flower color, or even causing flower buds to fail to bloom.

Winter fertilizer: It is the fertilization when the Chinese rose enters the dormant period, mainly applying organic fertilizer and a moderate amount of phosphorus fertilizer in a circular shallow trench. The depth and width of the trench are 10-20 cm and 20-30 cm respectively, with 0.25 kg of general calcium phosphate applied to each plant.
