Attention Points for Pruning Large Climbing Roses

Large climbing roses are usually those that have been cultivated for the second or third year. Such climbing roses have a large number of new and old branches. Some pruning is needed in winter. The following still uses hand-drawn illustrations to explain pruning.

Before pruning, it is best to remove the leaves first. Whether it's removing leaves or pruning, it is essential to wear protective gloves to prevent injury.

If a climbing rose is as shown in the picture above, after removing all the leaves, you can see that numbers ①②③④⑤ are old branches that have been牵引ed the previous year. The difference is that some of these old branches have grown strong new branches, while others only have weak short branches.

When pruning, we can decide whether to keep the old branches based on the number of new branches. For example, if there are enough new branches, it is recommended to cut off the old branches. If there aren't many new branches, the more vigorous old branches can be retained.

When pruning, we first cut off the three old branches with obvious poor vitality: ①②③, then cut off the upper half of ④⑤ because the upper half has poor vitality. For branch number ⑥, if the total number of our branches is insufficient, it can be retained first. The pruning method after retention is as shown in the following picture.

After such pruning, the fine branch buds that remain will sprout and can bloom, but the quality of the flowers will be relatively poorer.

After cutting off the old branches, prune the new branches, focusing on the branches' forks and the overly tender tops of the new branches, as shown in the picture above.

Short and weak branches should be cut off completely, while longer and robust branches can be retained appropriately. How much to retain still depends on the number of your branches. If there are many branches, you can cut freely; if there are few, it is recommended to retain more, as these robust branches can bloom.

After pruning, it will look like the picture above, and then we can牵引 it into shape. Specific牵引 methods can be found in the book "How to Grow Climbing Roses from Scratch" or continue to follow my updates.
