Rose棒棒糖 grafting
An article on green plant knowledge, introducing the content about rose and China rose grafting, specifically the grafting of rose棒棒糖, as follows:
Before talking about the grafting of rose棒棒糖, let's first understand what rose棒棒糖 is. It is actually a type of rose tree, but because rose trees are too tall and not suitable for balconies or small spaces, shorter rose trees have appeared, which are called棒棒糖 by flower enthusiasts.
For a beautiful and coordinated appearance, the height of the best viewing flowers for rose棒棒糖 is around 100-120 cm, based on the average human height of 172 cm. Therefore, the diameter and height of the rootstock should be chosen according to the mature plant height of the scion.
Ultra-micro roses: For varieties like Catch Me If You Can King's Candy, the rootstock is usually chosen to be 25-30 cm in height with a diameter of 1.2-2.0 cm.
Micro roses: Large-flowered micro roses are usually 25-35 cm in height, so the rootstock should be taller and thicker than ultra-micro roses, about 25-40 cm tall!
Large roses: We usually choose dense, branching, and flowering varieties for grafting. For varieties with good upright growth, a relatively short rootstock should be chosen for later viewing of the flowers, and for those that tend to droop, the rootstock should be taller! Because large roses depend entirely on later pruning, the rootstock selection can vary from 50-90 cm, depending on the desired effect!
Grafting materials: Craft knife, special grafting knife, blade, grafting film, and plastic wrap can all be used. Thorns-free rose, 35 cm in length, and micro rose branches from the Magnoliaceae family.
Rootstock: Thorns-free rose, 35 cm in length, diameter 1.5 cm. Scion: Micro rose, Magnoliaceae family; Grafting point: One bud; Grafting method: bark grafting.
1. Rootstock treatment
In order for the棒棒糖 to only grow branches of the Kordana in the later stage, we need to dig out all the bud points on the rose stem in the least traumatic way, so that no rose branches will grow out later. Don't worry about the wounds caused by digging the buds, as they heal quickly!
Let's get to know the cambium layer. The cambium layer is the smooth and shiny layer of cells outside the white xylem when the bark of a branch is peeled back. These cells can differentiate into the phloem and xylem, and as they continue to differentiate, the plant grows taller and thicker. The essence of grafting is to merge the cambium layer of the scion with that of the rootstock, creating a 'new' plant!
In the cross-section of this thorns-free rose, the outermost green ring is clearly the bark, and the part connected to the bark is the xylem, with the cambium layer between them.
2. Make a cut from the top of the rootstock down, with the specific length depending on the variety being grafted. I grafted a micro rose, the stem is thin, so I made a cut of 1.5 cm and carefully peeled the bark on both sides with a grafting knife, deciding the extent of the peel according to the thickness of the scion branch.
3. Scion branch treatment
The selection of the scion! Choose a branch with full buds and no diseases! Because the micro rose branch I grafted is not thick, I only had to cut off a little bit on the side of the bud point. For ultra-micro roses, the skin on the side of the bud point should be cut off, and for thicker large roses, more should be cut, making it smooth and preferably in one cut.
4. Insert the scion into the cut of the rootstock!
Note here that the scion should not be inserted into the entire cut of the rootstock, we call this 'leaving white space' to allow room for future healing tissue and prevent the grafting point from becoming lumpy.
Finally, wrap the entire grafting point with grafting film, leaving only one bud point exposed, and you can decide whether to add a moisturizing film depending on the local climate!
Why introduce this method? Because bark grafting involves peeling the bark, and after peeling, the exposed area is all cambium layer. There's no need to worry about not finding the cambium layer or about aligning it, making it very suitable for beginners like me!
The above sharing of the specific introduction to rose棒棒糖 grafting (with pictures and text) hopes to bring some floral knowledge to flower enthusiasts.
