When to trellis autumn climbing roses
From this picture, we can see that this climbing rose is not growing well, and the branches that have been trellised are all thin branches. So, can we do this kind of trellising for climbing roses in autumn? Let's talk about my own opinion.
Is it possible to trellis climbing roses in autumn?
Trellising of climbing roses is generally carried out during the winter dormancy period. The main reasons for choosing to trellis in winter are as follows:
1. Enough time for nutrient accumulation
When the temperature of climbing roses is below 5 degrees Celsius in winter, they will gradually enter a dormant state. At this time, new buds will not sprout, entering a period of nutrient accumulation. It can be seen that the buds of roses will swell and become full.
After about a month of nutrient accumulation, when the temperature rises, the roses' buds will uniformly sprout, grow rapidly, and bloom.
In the southern regions, climbing roses are difficult to achieve the blooming effect of the northern regions, one of the important reasons being that roses do not have a dormancy period and lack enough time for nutrient accumulation.
2. Convenient operation

Another reason for choosing to trellis in winter is for convenient operation. In winter, climbing roses enter dormancy and shed their leaves. In the areas around Jiangsu and Zhejiang, it is not very cold, and climbing roses often do not shed their leaves. However, we can manually remove the leaves, leaving only bare branches, which makes trellising and shaping much more convenient.
If trellising is done during the growing season, the roses have many leaves, which can easily rub and hook each other, making it very difficult to operate. Moreover, the new branches are not mature enough and can easily break. In winter, when trellising, the branches are more mature, and as long as they are not pulled too hard, there is usually little chance of breaking branches. For specific trellising methods, you can refer to the chapter on climbing roses in the book "How to Grow Explosive Roses from Scratch."
Considering the above two points, the effect of trellising in winter is the best. Does this mean that trellising cannot be done in autumn? Of course not. Everything has two sides, mainly depending on how you view the issue.
