Rose pruning is known to many rose enthusiasts who want to know when to prune roses. This article is a record of pruning by a rose enthusiast during rose maintenance, compiled for reference by other rose lovers. Heavy pruning before the Spring Festival, leaving a total of 3 strong branches from the current year. Each branch is left with only 5 buds, and a fertilizing process is carried out (after the flowers fade, apply a high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer, such as urea diluted in water. After a week, dig a groove along the edge of the pot and put in about a large tablespoon of compound fertilizer. Continue this until the flowers bloom and fade.)
A batch of flowers, from sprouting to fading, takes about a month and a half. Two-thirds of the sprouts bloom, and some are blind branches. Among the roses I have planted before, this performance is the best.
Second pruning: Light to moderate pruning. In the same batch of flowers, some bloom a few days earlier, and some bloom later. For the flowers that fade first, only the flower bud is cut off temporarily. When the last flower fades, pruning is done together.
Pruning scale: At least cut off the branches below the 2 pairs of leaves under the flowers, and no more than half the length of the branch. The height of the branches in the whole pot should be consistent. After the first flowers fade, new buds may have already sprouted during the waiting period for the last branch to fade. When pruning as a whole, refer to the fullness of the top buds of other branches after pruning, and the fullness of the top buds after pruning should be similar to that of other branches.
This ensures that the next batch of flowers will sprout and bloom consistently, avoiding the situation where there are flower buds when heavy fertilization is desired, which can cause bud drop. After overall pruning, continue with a fertilizing process, bloom the third batch of flowers, and after blooming, the third pruning is done, referring to the second pruning. For the following flowerings, you can refer to the second batch of flowers.
Throughout the spring, that pot of flowers bloomed neatly with many flowers, and I no longer worry about not being able to apply heavy fertilizers due to constant flower buds or flowers. The leaves of the well-fertilized roses are green and shiny, and the small red leaves are gone. After three flowerings, it's almost summer, which requires daily watering. Since the soil in the potted roses is limited, let it go dormant.
