The first step in pruning Climbing roses is to determine whether your rose is a Climbing rose. Although rambling roses and Climbing roses look similar, they are actually different varieties. The most effective way to tell the difference is to count the leaves, rambling roses have a set of 7 leaves, and Climbing roses have a set of 5 leaves. (Ranked by Home & Garden, 2011).
The following pruning method is suitable for Climbing roses. In the first two or three years after planting Climbing roses, no pruning or very light pruning is required. This period is the growing period of the roses and also an important stage for shaping your roses. The early shaping stage will determine whether your roses will bloom only on the top or from the bottom to the top. (Rose gardening make easy, 2011). Since this period is for developing the main branches, the number of flowers will be less. Only strong main stems (or long flowering canes) will produce lateral branches, which are flowering branches.
Usually, the time to prune roses is at the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The key to keeping Climbing roses neat is:
1. Main branches do not need to be pruned significantly, and even if they are cut, they should not be cut more than one-third of the total length. (Pruning at the end of winter and the beginning of spring)
2. Some main branches that are tangled and diseased can be pruned. (Pruning at the end of winter and the beginning of spring)
3. Branches can be pruned all year round.
4. If you want to wrap the branches, wrapping the branches at an angle to the horizontal ground will trigger more flowers.
